Good program but experience varies by location. Make sure you do your research and know why and where you want to be. Great job, great experience and wonderful culture and kids! The JET program is probably the most prestigious teaching abroad programs out there. I had the most wonderful experience teaching English and I would recommend it to anyone who is even a tiny bit interested.

One of the best ways to first live in Japan. Every situation with JET is different, as your experience is entirely up to where you get placed, but after being there two years I can say it is definitely the best way to start a career in Japan.

If you want to live in Japan, teaching English is a great first step. If you want to teach english abroad, the JET programme is the best choice. Highly organised, highly welcoming, every aspect of the organisation was perfect.

My school had great conditions and I could have happily stayed there for the full 5 years. However, this is part of the deal when you choose to teach English in another country at any company.

As this is a Japanese government-run organisation, you are well looked after and valued. This is probably not the case at a private language school or agency. What is amazing is that as an ALT you are supported in every way possible. Plane ticket is paid for, training pre and post arrival is provided, the hotel during post arrival training is amazing and paid for.

Before I arrived in Japan my future colleagues helped to find an apartment for me, and then helped me set up bank, mobile, internet, and everything else. Maybe I was lucky that I got a good school, but every one in my prefecture Saitama seemed to have a similar situation.

My quality of life was also unbeatable. I miss it. Great opportunity to live and work in Japan and gain teaching skills. I was challenged at my workplace without being overwhelmed. I was able to meet and work with both Japanese and foreign coworkers on a variety in-class and extracurricular activities.

The job allows you to improve your Japanese experience as you go. Great job to improve English learning in Japan with an amazing salary. Living in Japan and interacting with the locals is a stressful full-time job, but there are so many advantages to working as an assistant language teacher. The salary is amazing and covers your cost of living in Japan and any bills you might have in your home country.

However, the application and interview process is very extensive and competitive. Good chance to work in Japan. JET is not for everyone but if you are flexible and are interested in more than just anime and manga then it can be a wonderful chance to work in Japan.

There is no broad answer to what it is like becaues every situation is different. Each person has a different experience so you have to make it your own great time. No job advancement, each situation is different, can be very boring.

Working for JET was an amazing opportunity. Being fully immersed in Japanese culture and life was stretching, but rewarding. The role of my position varied with each English teacher I worked with. A few of my responsibilities were as follows: - Lesson Planning games, activities, and materials for the purpose of encouraging students to enjoy learning English.

Experiencing Japan and culture. Great opportunity to enhance Japanese language skills. Also, there is potential to be placed in extremely rural or isolated areas. A Valuable if stressful learning experience. Being an ALT is not a particularly difficult job compared to being a full-time teacher. You largely play a support role, creating fun activities and cultural exchange opportunities for students to practice English.

However, due to cultural differences, it can be very frustrating after a while. Change is slow and there are many traditions and rituals in the workplace that can make work life chaotic, dreadfully slow one week yet insanely busy the next. Still, you get to work in various work environments and are faced with many different challenges. Definitely a valuable experience. I stayed for two years and would not have minded a third had circumstances not called me home.

Unique Experience. Very enjoyable experience. Same problems as any other program ie AmeriCorps Teach For America where teachers come in and leave on a very short term basis - often a new teacher in a foreign environment. Effect on student education is questionable; however, the bonds and ability to instill an interest in English is definitely measurable.

Wonderful Experience. I was really lucky with my placement and have very much enjoyed my time as an Assistant Language Teacher. Be aware that you will have to navigate cultural differences and that can at times require a lot of patience. Great temporary gig to explore Japan. Positive attitude and enthusiasm very important.

Not a lot long term placement as most people leave after a year or two; but the stability of the job and quality of compensation is much higher than other similar jobs offered by 3rd party companies. JET Programme is the gold standard to do one of these opportunities and would only recommend this program after hearing from others who have gone to teach in placements offered by non-government sponsored organizations. Stagnant and uncooperative. The expectation is for you to adopt a new culture, but your coworkers and employers do not reciprocate in cultural exchange.

Working with the students was always the best part. The worst part is the complacency in policy at the school. You are viewed as a tool for the school to use, rather than a valuable component to the team.

Good opportunity to experience working in a different culture. Excellent for those interested in teaching, childcare, international development, or international businesses.

Great temporary position for recent college grads. I also am aware that certain benefits as well as the salary have been reduced compared to how they were when I was in the program, so it may not be as good as it once was.

However, in general, I really loved this job. I was always invited to staff parties at my schools and Board of Ed. I was invited to festivals and school events. I was made to feel very welcome by my town while I lived there. Not every JET will have rent-free housing, but thanks to that benefit I was able to pay off a huge dent in my student debt and I am really grateful to this day.

The government is trying to increase English education in elementary schools, and my prefectures response has been kind of haphazard. BUT other than that it was one the best experiences of my life. Be prepared for the fact that this is temporary! The best program for teaching in Japan. No other program compares with JET when it comes to teaching in Japan. If you want all the benefits and time to really contribute to the community with the chance to explore and experience Japan, this is the job for you.
