Nvidia originally started hash limiting with the RTX , and the company has already committed to not limiting the performance of GPUs already sold. While Nvidia tried to nerf mining with the RTX , the company also accidentally released a beta driver that unlocked hash rates and increased performance.

Nvidia quietly launches more GPUs for mining, not gaming

Nvidia has announced new efforts to ensure its graphics cards "end up in the hands of gamers" instead of cryptocurrency miners. Nvidia's RTX software drivers are "designed to detect specific attributes of the Ethereum cryptocurrency mining algorithm," per a blog post by Nvidia's VP of global GeForce marketing, Matt Wuebbling. But Ethereum miners' strong demand for new GPUs has caused a shortage in supply, and gamers are not happy.

The technology giant still plans to serve Ethereum miners, though. With the new Cryptocurrency Mining Processor CMP , Nvidia is offering a professional mining-specific product that doesn't "do graphics," per the post, a move it first announced last month.

Last month, Nvidia proclaimed that "Geforce Is Made for Gaming" and its RTX graphics card would ship with an Ethereum mining lock that.

Nvidia's anti-Ethereum Mining Lock is a Joke, and we aren't laughing

Nvidia's GeForce RTX branded graphics cards are receiving an update off the factory lines starting this month: hardware-level flags meant to slow down the mining of the popular cryptocurrency Ethereum. If this move sounds familiar, that's because Nvidia already took a massive swing at the cryptomining problem, only to whiff, with February's RTX That GPU's launch came with promises that its Ethereum mining rates had been cut in half from their full potential rate—a move meant to disincentivize miners from buying up limited stock. There is a secure handshake between the driver, the RTX silicon, and the BIOS firmware that prevents removal of the hash rate limiter. Yet shortly after that card's commercial launch, Nvidia released a developer-specific beta firmware driver that unlocked the GPU's full mining potential. Remember: that's firmware, not a BIOS rewrite or anything particularly invasive. With that cat out of the bag, the RTX forever became an Ethereum mining option. The company's blog post doesn't go into technical details on what's different this time around. Instead, Wccftech delivers additional context , albeit without any citations to either Nvidia representatives or other leakers, about the new, mildly tweaked SKUs for these GPUs. In Wccftech's estimation, the biggest difference is a "different device hardware ID" on these SKUs that will give Nvidia "an additional parameter" to block older, crytpo-friendly BIOS firmware versions.

Intel's new graphics cards won't have a crypto mining limit

Nvidia pulled a sneaky one today by rereleasing the RTX , this time with 12GB of memory and a higher hash rate. Despite a GPU shortage that has frustrated PC gamers, this card is once again directed toward the cryptomining market and not gamers. However, the real difference here with the 12GB model is that it is a cryptomining machine, putting it ahead of the newer RTX According to a graph from PCMarket, the new has a much higher hash rate of Suspiciously, Nvidia has not said a word probably for the best in regard to this launch, leaving its board partnersto deal with the angry feedback from gamers.

Something to look forward to: Following rumors about Nvidia relaunching the RTX 30 series with new GPUs featuring a cryptomining limiter, a new report claims that AIB partners have been informed that these chips will start shipping in mid-May.

Nvidia will add anti-mining flags to the rest of its RTX 3000 GPU series

Continuing their ongoing efforts to limit the Ethereum mining performance of their GeForce video cards — and thus make them less enticing for miners — NVIDIA today has announced that they are bringing their cryptocurrency hash limiter to additional GeForce cards. But it clearly has not deterred NVIDIA as they have continued to refine their hash limiter and, now, are expanding it to other cards. Key among that technology is an updated vBIOS that requires a minimum driver version — Meanwhile, these new cards will be receiving additional labeling to differentiate them from the original generation of unthrottled cards. Overall, this is part of a larger overall NVIDIA strategy to respond to the rise of Ethereum and the resulting crush of demand in the short term and the long term. Wrapping things up, the revised LHR GeForce series cards are already in production, and will begin shipping to retailers later this month.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 is not good for Ethereum mining

Crypto-currency enthusiasts have contributed to a shortage of graphics cards by snapping up supplies to use for non-gaming purposes. Nvidia said it had intervened to make sure its products "end up in the hands of gamers". But it will also sell a bespoke crypto-currency mining processor. A modern card can produce the high-resolution and high frame-rate graphics that gamers expect. But several factors, including manufacturing delays during the coronavirus pandemic, have contributed to a shortage. Graphics cards are also popular with crypto-currency investors, who can use them for processing transactions and generating bitcoins, in a process known as mining. Many miners build rigs using several graphics cards at a time to produce a powerful machine dedicated to mining crypto-currency, rather than gaming.

Graphics cards like Nvidia's RTX , with a suggested price of $, have fetched up to $2, When bricks-and-mortar stores get a few in.

The Best GPU For Ethereum Mining – NVIDIA and AMD Tested

Many moons ago, you could simply swing by Amazon and order a new video card, easy peasy. There are several market forces driving up the price, but the only one Nvidia can address is crypto mining. After launching the RTX with capped hash rate to limit its attractiveness to miners, Nvidia has announced it will release new versions of other RTX series cards with the same limitation. The value of cryptocurrencies has exploded over the past years, and GPUs are ideal for mining one of the most popular: Etherium.
