And the pricing situation for new GPUs only worsens when you factor in crypto miners and their hunger for every new piece of hardware. So, used GPUs can be quite enticing, as they cost significantly less than new ones. GPUs get hot when pushed hard. Therefore, manufacturers equip GPUs with cooling solutions.

Cryptocurrency has been pushed into mainstream popularity over the past couple of years, with currencies like Bitcoin and Dogecoin skyrocketing in value and endorsed by figures like billionaire Elon Musk. This rise in popularity, however, comes with a set of unique complications.

More recently, the GPU market saw a resurgence in this phenomenon, with shortages even more severe than before, coinciding with a leap in the value of popular cryptocurrencies.

But why would cryptocurrencies affect GPU demand, a product that is most popular among gamers? The answer lies in crypto mining, an integral part of the blockchain ecosystem. In the network of cryptocurrency, mining is a process that is required to validate a transaction.

A successful validation results in a small portion of the currency being rewarded to the miner as an incentive. This means that the more processing power a miner possesses, the more they can mine, and the larger the reward is.

Graphics Processing Units are highly efficient in completing these processes, more so than CPUs; thus, high-end GPUs are bought almost as soon as they are in stock. The interest in crypto mining is so high that cyber cafes and server farms as far as Iran and China have been converted to mine cryptocurrency. The demand for GPUs has certainly proved to be profitable for companies even as they face shortages.

However, the larger consumer base is still overwhelmingly the gaming community, who have been vocally displeased about the stock shortages.

The company hopes that this would deter the miners from purchasing their gaming GPUs and instead look towards their new product lineup — the Crypto Mining Processors CMP. The new CMPs lack the display outputs and are capable of better airflow while being used for mining, thus allowing them to be more densely packed. The company hosts a dedicated list of third party multi GPU rigs that utilise their products to use as mining servers.

AMD has also partnered with companies like Morgenrot, Bullet Render Farms and Consensys, among others, to provide blockchain solutions beyond the realm of cryptocurrency. Some studies have revealed that the collective energy consumed due to bitcoin mining is equivalent to that of entire nations.

While the CMP is a dedicated processor for Ethereum mining, the ASIC Bitcoin Miner is a highly optimised integrated circuit that is uniquely efficient in mining Bitcoin and is used by server farms and data centres worldwide. This move also discourages new, non-industrial miners from entering an already costly ecosystem.

On the other hand, Nvidia has not revealed any plans to prevent other cryptocurrency mining software from running on their GPUs, which could potentially cause yet another shortage. Currently, blockchain and distributed-ledger-based companies like Hedera, Theta Labs, and Dapper Labs are built on top of Google Cloud for scalability, flexibility, and security.

Despite the rising popularity of ASIC chips, which even managed to elbow Nvidia out of the crypto market, GPU mining remains fairly popular, especially with regard to altcoins. However, there are still many doubts about whether mining puts a graphics card at risk. There is a common belief that hardware becomes disposable after a certain period of time. However, there is no evidence to prove that long-term use at full load will affect the lifespan of a graphics card. GPUs are usually replaced because they are no longer efficient.

Mining is tough on GPU and boards. They are pushed to their limits, and it all adds up.

Nvidia limits crypto-mining on new graphics card

Back in , during the height of the GPU bitcoin mining craze and before ASICs had taken over the market, prices for video cards reached absurd levels. This primarily impacted AMD, since GCN-based cards were vastly better at Bitcoin and Litecoin mining than their Nvidia counterparts, but the end result was awful for enthusiast gamers. Eventually the market cooled down as more customers shifted to ASICs, which both outperformed GPUs and offered a performance-per-watt metric no graphics card could match. UpgradeYourTech keeps track of product SKUs over time, and maps how they change over weeks and months. At first glance, this might seem like a great thing for both AMD and Nvidia, since after all, higher GPU prices means more money, right?

Cryptocurrency mining requires the right hardware, software, and a mining pool. It takes a lot of knowledge, guidance, and patience to initialize the whole process. The following tutorial will help you build a 6 GPU mining rig for mining cryptocurrencies. It is meant for individuals who do not have any experience in building computers on their own. A Mining rig is a hardware which is responsible for adding new coins into the existing circulating supply of any cryptocurrency.

How GPUs Are Changing The Data Mining Game

This sounds interesting, but cryptocurrency mining is not easy to achieve, requiring deep technical knowledge. Miners add these new blocks to the blockchain and either include a proof of work or POW. To mine currency, one needs a special mining computer and a program that allows the miner to compete with other miners. The goal is to solve complex mathematical problems. This task requires enormous computational power, electricity, and hardware that can handle such a task. Each block is solved by the miner using a cryptographic hash function that is repeated at regular intervals. A hash is a numerical value with a specified length that is used to identify data.

Cryptocurrency miners are buying lots of mid- to high-end GPUs to keep their operations profitable in a very competitive market. The price for the average GPU was already above average in summer, but with the sudden spike in Bitcoin value — and public interest — before Christmas, we are in the middle of a second GPU price surge. The price surge is fueled by an increasing demand for alternative cryptocurrencies, like Ethereum and Monero. Countries that are attractive to cryptocurrencies miners cheap power might see an even bigger increase in GPU retail prices.
