Web APIs or application programming interfaces allow you to send input and get output from a web application. The output they create is frequently in the form of a JSON string. APIs usually have some limits. In this way, the Coinmarketcap API is no exception. The free version of the Coinmarketcap API allows up to 30 calls per minute, calls per month, and calls per day. The company also offers various other paid plans that enable more API calls.

Streaming price data lays the foundation for many exciting machine learning applications in finance, such as generating trading signals for buy and sell orders. This tutorial shows how to stream bitcoin price quotes in real-time via a public API and save the data to a local SQLite database.
The rest of this article is structured as follows: Before getting your hands dirty in the coding part, you first need to obtain a free API key from Coinmarketcap. We will then use this key when we make calls to stream price quotes. Finally, I show how you can query the obtained price quotes from our local database and use them later on, for example, to train a price prediction model. Coinmarketcap is one of the most popular websites in the crypto space.
It provides price data, charts, and other information for a wide range of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. To acquire your API key, you need to register an account. During the registration process, you will have the choice between different pricing plans.
Fortunately, there is a free plan for personal use. For the sample code to work, you need to create a YAML file in the same folder where your Python project files are located, named coinmarketcap. Insert your code into this file as follow:. Each call to the Coinmarketcap API consumes credits. The number of calls and data we can retrieve via API is limited to credits for the free plan. You can see how many of your daily and monthly credits are still available on the overview page.
In the following, we implement a regular call to the Coinmarketcap API. After each call to the API, we create an object for the price point and store it in a local SQLite database using the Peewee framework. Before beginning the coding part, please make sure that you have set up your Python 3 environment and required packages.
Also, make sure you install the required packages. In this tutorial, we will be working with the following standard packages:. In addition, for visualization purposes, we will use Seaborn. We begin by defining a relational data model in SQlite, in which we will store the obtained price quotes.
For this purpose, we will use Peewee, which is an object-oriented framework that allows us to create objects and persist them to the SQLite database. Our model contains two tables:. Once we have created the relational data model, we can define a request to the Coinmarketcap API and send a streaming request. Coinmarketcap offers different APIs.
This API provides the latest price data for several cryptocurrencies. This value will lead to the API only returning the price of Bitcoin. A value of 2 will additionally also return the price of Ethereum ETH. Higher values will give back additional cryptocurrencies depending on their market cap ranking. I have set the query interval to 10 seconds, but you can change it to any other value.
However, be aware that you will deplete your free credits quickly if you request data by the second. I have limited the number of price quotes retrieved to If you want to retrieve price quotes for more extended periods, increase the timeframe. First, we will check for the number of runs. In this article, you have learned how to stream bitcoin price data in real-time using the Coinmarketcap API.
After reading this article, you are well-prepared to use other APIs to retrieve prices on various assets, such as stocks or stock market indexes. If the tutorial helped you or you have any comments, please let me know in the comments. And if you are interested in working with cryptocurrency price data, check out my recent article on color-coded bitcoin price charts. Since the completion of my Ph. I started this blog in with the goal in mind to share my experiences and create a place where you can find key concepts of machine learning and materials that will allow you to kick-start your own Python projects.

There is always a need for more modules. Check out the forums to see what people are requesting. If you have created an module, feel free to edit this page and add your module to the list. As MagicMirror is a fantastic project that is highly connected with aesthetics , it is surprising to see how few module developers actually bother to put a screenshot on their README pages. As MM has gained huge popularity, so has the number of available modules.

The way Bitcoin transactions always backtrace the whole transaction list since the first discovered block the Genesis block does not only work for finance. So you could guess that Bitcoin and especially its components the Blockchain and various Sidechains should also be among the most exciting fields for data science and visualization. For the first time, the network of financial transactions many sociologists such as Georg Simmel theorized about becomes visible. A reasonable query interval should be one query every 10s. The last two examples all were based on aggregated values. The red dot is the address we were looking at so you can change the value to one of your own Bitcoin addresses :. Thanks for a nice use case. Also there is no need for antiddos function anymore as it is now built-in every web call. Instead of Rbitcoin. I can recommend to use github version, it is already stable version, just waiting for dependency update.

Bitcoin Core formerly Bitcoin-Qt is the third Bitcoin client , developed by Wladimir van der Laan based on the original reference code by Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin-Qt has been rebranded to Bitcoin Core since version 0. Bitcoin Core can be used as a desktop client for regular payments or as a server utility for merchants and other payment services. Source code and build instructions for supported platforms can be found on the Bitcoin GitHub page. Bitcoin Core right now may be the most popular or "reference" full node implementation, but that status depends on the economic majority continuing to use it [11].

If you're quite technically-minded, the Zano whitepaper gives a thorough overview of Zano's design and its main features. So, what is Zano? In brief, Zano is a project started by the original developers of CryptoNote. Coins with market caps totalling well over a billion dollars Monero, Haven, Loki and countless others run upon the codebase they created. Zano is a continuation of their efforts to create the " perfect money ", and brings a wealth of enhancements to their original CryptoNote code. Development happens at a lightning pace, as the Github activity shows, but Zano is still very much a work-in-progress. Let's cut right to it: Here's why you should pay attention to Zano over the next months.
