How the GPU chip shortage hit gamers and crypto miners

Ray-tracing is an algorithm used in generating synthetic images that are almost unbelievably realistic, correctly modelling complex optical interactions such as reflection, transparency and refraction, but this sort of realism comes at huge computational cost.

You can therefore see why gamers and digital artists might be very keen to get their hands on the latest special-purpose hardware that can speed up the creation of images rendered in this way. You can therefore see why cryptocurrency fans might be very keen to get their hands on the latest special-purpose hardware that can speed up the calculations needed to earn cryptocoins.

This tension between graphics-cards-used-for-graphics and graphics-cards-used-for-cryptomining has regularly led to new product releases from GPU makers selling out almost immediately, followed by the inevitable price gouging by buyers who were able to get hold of retail stock and then to flip their cards for a quick online profit.

Selling plenty of product may be a great outcome for GPU vendors, but the artifical price inflation caused by stock shortages is a less welcome look for any mainstream company.

For its new product, Nvidia has therefore openly stated in advance that its software drivers for the RTX are deliberately biased against cryptomining:. However, Bitcoin mining can be accelerated even more dramatically by using special-purpose chips built for the sole purpose of mining, so many BTC mining consortiums splash out on custom mining hardware instead of buying in general-purpose GPUs.

Ethereum calculations, however, currently use a weird mix of several different hashes, some cryptographic and others simply basic bit-stirring hashes, based on inputs drawn pseudo-randomly from a enormous pseudo-randomly generated pool of data known as the dataset.

This dataset needs recomputing every few days, takes up gigabytes of memory, and needs to be directly accessible in RAM throughout all your mining calculations.

Any dedicated Ethereum mining hardware would not only need to include customised and accelerated hash calculating chips that could outperform your GPU, but also need to be based on a better performing motherboard with better memory management hardware and faster RAM than your gaming rig.

Hacking the Nvidia drivers would break their digital signatures, but on your own Windows computer you can load modified and unsigned drivers easily enough. Follow NakedSecurity on Twitter for the latest computer security news. NVidia cards are also really popular for machine learning work. Did you READ the article? Buy the product that they make for the purpose they make it for. Gamers are miners too — this screws anyone who wanted to mine while not using the machine to game.

Now, if we assume that the average miner buys up a lot more GPUs than the average gamer, you can see why the company might want to create a product that many gamers — those who prefer to game than to mine — not only will want to buy but also will probably find in stock.

Comments here so far, however, seem to suggest that quite a lot of keen gamers will be happy to forego the mining in return for gaming cards that are easier and cheaper to get hold of…. It does give a good return even in California pricing. Eh…they did it to keep GPU prices down and availability up for gamers. They said it specificallly. There already is a massive silicon shortage and there is only so much capacity on the fabs to manufacture chips, so the ones that are created specifically for mining are chips that are NOT going to gaming cards, which means less availability for gamers, not more.

Patient gamers can wait a bit and score a really good deal on a used card, and any miners who know their stuff typically undervolt their cards to lower heat generation and power usage, so those cards typically are still very good.

They saw what happened when crypto crashed a few years back and miners dumped their cards to the 2nd hand market and everyone bought high end GTX 10XX series cards cheap instead of buying the shiny new RTX 20XX series cards that were priced stupidly high. This would be GOOD for gamers who actually want their gaming cards for gaming. Same sort of situation as with iPhone jailbreaks. Anyway, for all we know, the cryptomining community, and perhaps the machine learning scene, may warm if you will pardon the pun to these new CMPs that Nvidia is talking about.

However, even if what is known as Ethereum 2. Nvidia thinks that we are stupid and trying to troll us with this announcement. Each silicon has a potential to be a gaming card or anything else. This announcement could be in no way beneficial for either gamers or miners. This announcement only helps Nvidia to earn more from the situations of shortages and high demands. The new lineup is going to replace a huge amount of gaming cards availability by the time Nvidia get enough stock.

So, a company using software to cripple the safe usability of the hardware? Apple did the same thing with iOS and batteries on their iPhones.

That did not end well. I understand the sentiment of Nvidia, trying to solve a real issue with accessibility of their products…but it makes no sense. One with all the fruit to be a great graphics card, along with software to reject mining and another one with none of the graphics connectors on it which is targeted at the miners.

We house DNA and finger prints of people, track firearms serial numbers and even keep records on vehicles to make them easier to track down. The sort of illegal cryptomining I was talking about in the article is where the crooks put malware on your computer and run code on your GPU or CPU without permission.

They force you into a price and usage segment. Good for them. If that solves the gpu shortage gods for us. Incidentally most of the people running folding setups are using older ex-mining cards for the same reason ie non availability of more recent ones even to the extent of repairing broken units and buying upgraded fans etc. One thing Nvidia could do to really help here would be releasing a diagnostics tool that identifies what broke, as many perfectly repairable cards are needlessly trashed due to lack of information.

Thanks for confirming Paul. I do occasionally use them for playing games. Folding Home is carried out for the benefit of others rather than personal profit and I would really hope is not affected by this.

However, if I need to purchase separate hardware for Folding Home, I will. I doubt that many community-minded individuals are buying up graphics cards exclusively for F h in the sort of volumes that ROI-minded cryptominers are. NVidea made their name in graphics for gaming, not in bitcoin harvesting or elerium or whatever the difference is. As is, their core market that made the company has seen incredibly skyrocketing prices because of people buying gaming hardware for something else.

Windows for gaming. Linux with open source drivers for mining. Greedcorp, screwing over the used market segment and making their end users thank them for it.

While demand for the card is already high, those who bet on the cryptocurrency market should put it aside thanks to reports that it has a hashrate considered quite low. Also present in models like the RTX , the algorithm can even be fooled with the use of hacks or drivers leaked by NVIDIA itself , but has been efficient in preventing some hardware from becoming a target of the cryptocurrency market. Information obtained from VideoCardz. According to the website, this means that the device would need to work for days before being able to pay the investment necessary to acquire it. The recent drop in the price of Bitcoin and Ethereum makes even entry models prove unprofitable given the amount of work required for those who generate interesting income. However, this does not necessarily mean that it will be an easy task to find an RTX in stores. Although NVIDIA has promised above-average stocks for the new model, everything indicates that it will be difficult to find it for the original price at its launch, scheduled for the 27th of this month. Until the moment the manufacturer has not announced how much it will officially charge for the hardware which in benchmarks showed a performance close to that of the GTX Ti. Of Course NVIDIA’s Attempt to Limit Cryptocurrency Mining Immediately Failed

Graphics card buyers have been warned about the influx of used GPUs from cryptocurrency miners, which are considered risky purchases. This comes after China, which previously harbored a massive chunk of the world's crypto mining operations, started cracking down on miners. One of the main reasons was the insane amounts of electricity that a single mining rig consumes. Multiply that by hundreds or even thousands with some miners even consuming power illegally , and you'll see the issue.

Why China Is Cracking Down on Bitcoin Mining and What It Could Mean for Other Countries

As the Russian Federation deliberates to ban cryptocurrency mining, the world's leading and most popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin is now close to touching five-month lows, mirroring last year's levels after billionaire Elon Musk decided to revise Tesla Inc's decision to accept the cryptocurrency as a form of payment, as he cited adverse environmental impacts from the energy used in mining. Mining the currency requires graphics processing units GPUs , which are also used in running video games, and the new Bitcoin price levels, if sustained, carry the possibility of mines deciding to resell their equipment. This, in turn, could ease up the significant supply shortages that consumers are facing right now. Suspected marijuana plant raid turns into crypto mining farm discovery. The new price lows come as part of the wider market that is considering the impact of the United States Federal Reserve possibly increasing interest rates to cut down on the wide wave of inflation gripping the country, unrest in Kazakhistan - a major hub of cryptocurrency mining -, and the Russian central bank's proposal to limit mining and cryptocurrency use within the country's borders. All this might prove to be a breath of fresh air for gamers all around the world as cryptocurrency miners could end up deciding that using GPUs for performing the transactions isn't profitable. Subsequently, they could decide to sell their used products, and those desperate for them could risk buying them even with risky warranties. While the used GPU market itself is unlikely to directly influence prices or availability if we add another link in our chain of assumptions, then miners flooding the market with used products could in turn cause some jitters among the infamous scalpers.

Crypto Miners: Nvidia’s Lightweight Hash Rate Locator Hasn’t Stopped Us Much

Before , there was no such thing as cryptocurrency. As technology advanced to keep up with the rampant demand, cryptocurrency mining became a reality for many on their home computers. Over the years, the mining process and its efficiency have improved with the use of better hardware. Graphics Processing Units GPU have been used in the mining process for years, simply because they are more efficient than their immediate counterparts. However, its limited processing speed and high power consumption led to limited output, rendering the CPU-based mining process inefficient.

Cryptocurrency has been pushed into mainstream popularity over the past couple of years, with currencies like Bitcoin and Dogecoin skyrocketing in value and endorsed by figures like billionaire Elon Musk. This rise in popularity, however, comes with a set of unique complications. More recently, the GPU market saw a resurgence in this phenomenon, with shortages even more severe than before, coinciding with a leap in the value of popular cryptocurrencies.
