Don Bilson inadvertently waded into a minor Canadian political maelstrom over foreign investment when he dashed off a word note on Jan. His speculation also coincided with a political dust-up in Ottawa about the effect of foreign takeovers on supply chain resiliency, rising tensions with China and the green energy transition, all of which have touched a nerve in Canada. That followed the departure of his predecessor, Chuck Magro in April The company offered no explanation for either executive exit.

Nutrien, meanwhile, operates six potash mines, but never produces at full capacity because it has said the market is well-supplied. Those facts alone prompted some analysts to speculate BHP, which spent years on the fence about potash, could strike some kind of deal with Nutrien, whether that took the form of an acquisition, sale or partnership.
That same month, it also announced it is targeting net-zero emissions by , but said it would exclude emissions from its steelmaking customers. Humphrey Knight, an analyst at commodity research firm CRU Group, said potash is a low-carbon commodity that can be produced and used with few emissions compared to other fertilizers. BHP has cited other factors for its interest in potash including that it diversifies its existing portfolio, and that operating in Canada would give the company a footprint in North America.
Buying Nutrien may give it a larger stake in the potash business, but the company also sells two other kinds of fertilizers, and it has a global network of retail agricultural supply outlets. Nonetheless, if it were to move into potash, some type of deal with Nutrien could make sense.
