Her research focuses on the legal challenges and opportunities of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence, with specific focus on governance and trust. In addition to her academic research, Primavera acts as a legal expert for Creative Commons and is part of the stakeholder board of the P2P Foundation. As an artist, she produces mechanical algorithms that instantiate her legal research into the physical world, such as the Plantoid project. In this seminar, Primavera will explore how blockchain technology has enabled the emergence of alternative value systems, relying on crypto-currencies or blockchain-based tokens. These tokens can be used for a variety of functions: from the funding of new initiatives via Initial Coin Offerings, to the selling scarce digital artworks trough NFTs. The particularity of these new value systems is that they are not based on debt as most fiat currencies are but rather on value: new tokens are minted when new products or services are created, whose market value will depend on the perceived value that these product or services hold in the eyes of consumers.

We use the actions of Anonymous against Daesh in response to the November attacks in Paris as a springboard, inviting anthropologist Gabriella Coleman to discuss the history and nature of Anonymous, its relationship to legal frameworks, and what its future as a movement might look like. We then speak with Lex Gill, co-author of «Towards digital constitutionalism? Mapping attempts to craft an Internet Bill of Rights,» a working paper of the Berkman Klein Center, who illuminates for us some of the currents, issues, and potentials in the crafting of norms in relation to internet use.
LulzSec hacker Mustafa Al-Bassam has joined a payments company to work on blockchain. Trained as an anthropologist, her scholarship explores the intersection of the cultures of hacking and politics , with a focus on the sociopolitical implications of the free software movement and the digital protest ensemble Anonymous.
Her work has been featured in numerous scholarly journals and edited volumes. Blockchain for the Global Commons View all 4 Articles. In recent years, the increasing need for global coordination has attracted interest in the governance of global-scale commons. In the current context, we observe how online applications are ubiquitous, and how emerging technologies enable new capabilities while reshaping sectors. Thus, it is pertinent to ask: could blockchain technologies facilitate the extension and scaling up of cooperative practices and commons management in this global context? In order to address this question, we propose a focus on the most paradigmatic and widely successful examples of global cooperation: global digital commons.

Created by Primavera De Filippi, this particular species of Plantoid utilises the artistic medium to illustrate the inner workings of decentralised autonomous organisations DAOs , so that people can better understand the potential benefits and challenges of this powerful, emergent technology. The goal of the Plantoid is to illustrate one of the most revolutionary — and yet still unexplored — aspects of blockchain technology. It illustrates the ability to create 'blockchain-based lifeforms', i. De Filippi's Plantoid is a hybrid, 'blockchain-based life form' that has both a physical and digital form. Its physical form is an electro-mechanical device welded from recycled materials that simulates the appearance of a plant. There have been conferences, books, white papers, start-ups, and numerous back-channel discussions on ways blockchain technology can address seemingly endless processes, but librarians have not been evidenced in these mainstream discussions. However, the use of blockchain technology in libraries seems to be on the radar of many information professionals. The goal of this IMLS-funded project is to gain a better understanding of blockchain technology and imagine its potential for small and large, urban and rural libraries and their communities. The collaborative economy is not what we were promised. Inspired by Wikipedia, it emerged from the idea of a peer-to-peer networks of citizens, sharing and collaborating for the common good, in every field. However, today we can observe how digital monopolies concentrating data, resources and power are the new normal. Instead of decentralizing the power of traditional institutions, we can see how the platform economy is creating larger than ever monopolies: Uber is larger than any taxi company, Airbnb than any hotel chain, Google than the traditional providers of infrastructure and Facebook governs more than 2 billion users. This market dominance has, of course, some benefits of the services they provide, but it is not without serious drawbacks, in a context where scandals are common. Even worse, any new start-up aims to either be absorbed by these giants or become the new monopoly in a non-platformed field. Is this science-fiction pseudo-dystopian scenario all we can expect? What would it take to change the rules of this nasty game?
