N o longer dismissed as a haven for criminals and drug dealers, Bitcoin and blockchain have gone mainstream. They take the spots of such U. In , it processed 1 billion shipments, 30 million containers and 14 million documents, more than double the previous year. Maersk has also partnered with Microsoft to process marine insurance using blockchain tech. Alibaba spin-off Ant has more than 50 blockchain applications in development on its own blockchain platform, AntChain. One notable example is OpenChain, which launched in to enable small and medium-sized enterprises to tap its blockchain technologies and smart contracts as a way to lower costs.

A new video above explains how the paper trails of tens of millions of shipping containers from all over the world will be managed by the software, based on the Hyperledger Fabric and built by IBM and Maersk, which has the potential to save the industry billions of dollars. IBM and Maersk's video explains the process through research that followed international shipments of flowers to Royal FloraHolland from Kenya, Mandarin oranges from California, and pineapples from Colombia to validate the solution for shipments coming into the Port of Rotterdam. According to research by Maersk, single shipments can require sign-off from 30 unique organisations and up to communications. As a result, one lost form or late approval could leave the container stuck in a port and the whole process can take more than one month. Blockchain, as a shared, distributed ledger, aims to digitize this process and trace a containers path through the supply chain with transparency and security. This involves a shipment being prepared and information added to blockchain. Then, as the container awaits transfer to port, officials submit approvals electronically. Blockchain confirms transactions and executes smart contracts to release the shipment. Afterwards, the container is loaded onto the ship.
Ep. 32 – IBM’s Blockchain in the Insurance Industry
The emergence of a new methodology for business-to-business transacting is upon us. Blockchain is touted as the framework to eliminate the middleman in the supply chain process, while enabling a more secure transaction at a lower cost. Blockchain was invented in and implemented for Bitcoin a year later. Since then it has been on a fast evolution to market. The Hyperledger project was created from the Linux Foundation in

IBM launches global blockchain-based payments network
First used to track cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, blockchain is finding its way into tracking and quality control systems in healthcare, including clinical laboratories and big pharma. Four companies were selected by the US Food and Drug Administration FDA to participate in a pilot program that will utilize blockchain technology to create a real-time monitoring network for pharmaceutical products. Each company will bring its own distinct expertise to the venture. This important project to utilize blockchain technologies in the pharmaceutical distribution chain is another example of prominent healthcare organizations looking to benefit from blockchain technology. Clinical laboratories and health insurers also are collaborating on blockchain projects. A recent intelligence briefing from The Dark Report , the sister publication of Dark Daily , describes collaborations between multiple health insurers and Quest Diagnostics to improve their provider directories using blockchain. Blockchain continues to intrigue federal officials, health network administrators, and health information technology HIT developers looking for ways to accurately and efficiently track inventory, improve information access and retrieval, and increase the accuracy of collected and stored patient data.
IBM, Ford unveil blockchain project to track cobalt, other minerals
IBM and Maersk have just finished an end-to-end digitised supply chain pilot using blockchain technology. The blockchain will begin scaling a network of shippers, freight forwarders, ocean lines, ports and customs authorities later in This technology, therefore, has the potential to make massive, scalable savings in this area, amongst several others.

IBM develops private and permissioned blockchains, which stand in contrast to public blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. IBM notably utilizes Hyperledger Fabric , an open-source blockchain protocol developed by the Linux Foundation-hosted Hyperledger consortium, as the base layer of its blockchains. IBM was a founding member of the Hyperledger consortium, which was created in The project offers a development library to allow businesses to create customizable distributed ledger solutions without using a public blockchain like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Created in , IBM Food Trust is a blockchain solution that makes food items traceable as they move through the supply chain.

The power of blockchain is applicable to the telecommunications business, which participates in an eco-system with a large network of disparate organizations. Blockchain establishes a shared, immutable record of all the transactions that take place within a network and then enables permissioned parties access to trusted data in real time. By applying the technology to end-to-end telco processes, a new form of command and consent can be introduced into the flow of information that enables significant gains in efficiency and trust. By allowing participating members secure and authorized access to necessary details, blockchain also delivers enhanced privacy and confidentiality. The complexity of business processes within telecommunications is why the market size for blockchain telecommunications projects is expected to grow from USD The solution is a clear example of how the application of blockchain technology within the telco networks, dramatically enhances the accuracy and immutability of the data generated while delivering different services.
