Stanford group wants to use your computer to help researchers study the coronavirus
Founded by chemistry, structural biology and computer science professor Vijay Pande in at Stanford, the global computing research community [email protected] FAH is now joining the race to find a cure for COVID Volunteers from across the globe are downloading the FAH software, which is accessible to everyone, to run simulations of protein-folding in the background of their computer. In , collaborators from Stanford University joined the project and later increased computing performance to a level that rivaled that of a supercomputer. Upon downloading the FAH software, volunteers are given specific proteins to run simulations on. They then can start folding by running their extra CPU power — a part of the computer that operates instructions — and later, they upload the results. Thynell, who joined the [email protected] community in , said that since COVID began, he and his team have created a separate project that relied on the [email protected] concept to understand SARS-CoV Thynell broke down the process and importance of understanding protein dynamics when trying to find treatments or solutions to diseases, pandemics and more. So these proteins are actually like small machines … We wanted to understand more about the virus and hopefully find some hidden pockets.

Folding home FAH or F h is a distributed computing project for disease research that simulates protein folding, computational drug design, and other types of molecular dynamics. As of today, the project is using the idle resources of personal computers owned by volunteers from all over the world. Proteins are the elementary machines inside every cell that we rely on to keep us alive and healthy. If we better understand protein misfolding we can design drugs and therapies to combat these illnesses. Our group has developed multiple new ways to simulate protein folding which can break the fundamental barrier of simulating experimental timescales by dividing the work between multiple processors in a new way — with a near linear speedup in the number of processors. Thus, with power of Folding home approximately , processor-cores , we have successfully smashed the millisecond barrier and helped to unlock the mystery of how proteins fold.

Folding home is joining researchers around the world working to better understand the Coronavirus nCoV to accelerate the open science effort to develop new life-saving therapies. By downloading Folding Home, you can donate your unused computational resources to the Folding home Consortium, where researchers working to advance our understanding of the structures of potential drug targets for nCoV that could aid in the design of new therapies. The data you help us generate will be quickly and openly disseminated as part of an open science collaboration of multiple laboratories around the world, giving researchers new tools that may unlock new opportunities for developing lifesaving drugs. Distributed computing project takes up the fight against nCov and all you need is a computer to join the effort. Folding home FAH is a distributed computing project for disease research, which harnesses the spare processing power of hundreds of thousands of personal computers across the world, that are owned by volunteers who have installed the software on their systems. On 27th February the project announced that it was now taking up the fight again nCov , with the aim of helping to develop a therapeutic antibody, similar to that previously developed for SARS-Cov. FAH can make use of both CPUs and GPUs and, if you have the latter, you should try to ensure that you have the relevant drivers installed, since GPUs will provide far greater number crunching ability for tasks such as this. The system had recently been reinstalled and was running a fresh copy of Ubuntu So this meant we that needed to start by installing the drivers from NVIDIA and as part of which disabling the default driver.
