Bitcoin: A viable currency?
Chautauqua, the horse that failed to jump yet again, leaves questions for Racing NSW. For the sixth time in a row, the horse affectionately known as the "Grey Flash" stood alone in the stalls, as the field leapt from the barriers at a trial in Sydney yesterday. The flat inflection of the race-caller said it all, as the field fled into the distance. Chautauqua's fail-rate is now unprecedented, and it's got everybody in the industry scratching their heads, while there are some calls for the popular gelding to be retired immediately.
While he's had nothing to do with Chautauqua, he believes the problem is behavioural. From my limited understanding, it looks as if he's having a freeze response. Racing NSW's chief steward Marc van Gestel says his team must now consider banning the horse completely, given his poor track record. Dr McLean has done extensive research on equine intelligence, and says it's unlikely the horse is suffering by being put through the trial process time and time again. They don't extrapolate, they don't hope.
They don't have those abilities to feel guilty or whatever like we do. They are very good at reacting to triggers in the environment. Chautauqua finished fourth in The Everest last year and connections have continued to test the grey's willingness to race, in the hope he'd win a slot this year.
Racing is an industry adjusting to changing public expectations. It has made two significant land purchases in the last two years which may become homes for retired racehorses, and it has set up an equine welfare fund. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn, and work.
But Chautauqua can no longer be coaxed to race. More on:. Back to top. Footer ABC News homepage.

But in life, many things are actually not what they first seem. This is one of those things. In fact, it is not only not what it seems. It is the exact opposite. First, we need to establish some contextual groundwork. This is a critical step, because lack of clarity on what Bitcoin is and is not, has the potential to muddle an entire subsequent analysis.

Home Kent News Article. Here's a sobering thought. The big question for many now is whether Bitcoin - or the thousands of other cryptocurrencies like it - could still deliver the riches if we invest now? Not only have we decided to put it to the test - with some remarkably swift results - but we spoke to some experts in the field keen to not only understand just what cryptocurrency is but why an increasing number of Kent's youngsters are taking the plunge in pursuit of future riches. And we ask whether Bitcoin is still the currency to invest in or, as some suggest, it will simply be the forerunner to another currency still to emerge. Now, it would be easy here to blind you with in-depth descriptions of the blockchain technology which lurks behind it - or start banging on about the difference between centralised and decentralised currencies - both absolutely essential to the story - but let's not get bogged down just yet. What you want to know is have you missed the boat - or are some big windfalls still waiting to be claimed? After all, you can't hold them in your hand, can't use them in Tesco, and you can't pop into your local branch of Bitcoin and ask to speak to the manager about a loan. It is a currency whose popularity is entirely in the hands of the people.

Every instinct as an investor tells me to stay away from bitcoin, the online "crypto" currency invented by some mystery man and criticized by JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon on Tuesday as a "fraud. Dimon, one of the most powerful voices on Wall Street, said he would fire anyone trading in it because it's "stupid. It will blow up. Like most American investors, I am into vanilla savings like mutual funds, stocks, bonds and cold, hard cash. I don't buy gold.

An unexpected temperature rise might be the first sign of an illness or injury. It can also alert you to conditions that are causing your horse to overheat. For example, a strenuous ride on an unseasonably warm winter day might be more challenging for an unclipped horse than you realize, causing his temperature to rise into an unsafe range. Hang a dry-erase board near his stall for recording these readings, as well as his resting pulse and respiration. Knowing his baseline can also help you track his fitness. They usually drop again within 20 to 30 minutes after exercise. To monitor how quickly your horse recovers, take his temperature immediately after untacking him. Some even learn to move their tails out of the way for you when you initiate the process.

The fortune of digital currency exists on a lost hard drive dumped in a rubbish tip. James Howells, 36, accidentally dumped the hard drive when he threw out equipment during an office spring clean in It is now sitting somewhere in a council rubbish tip in Newport, South Wales — and the value of Bitcoin has rocketed in the intervening years.

News that a Bitcoin ATM has started operating in Vancouver has left many Canadians scratching their heads: What the heck is a Bitcoin and why should people care? Bitcoin is a digital currency. It is essentially an open source piece of software that maintains a distributed, peer-to-peer accounting ledger of all Bitcoin transactions. The Bitcoin network keeps track of who owns each Bitcoin, which prevents people from spending the same coin twice.
The subject was cryptocurrencies or, more accurately, their veracity. It was not a long, nor particularly nuanced conversation. I had written a piece elsewhere about the febrile house prices in the UK, and CBR replied to tell me that the problem was not the housing market per se , but that money itself was becoming worthless. To which I replied that Bitcoin is really Monopoly money and that, at some point, everyone was going to lose their shirt with it. That is nice, but I am still not buying it.
To kick off ConsenSys' Ethereal Summit on Thursday, Unchained Podcast host Laura Shin held a cozy fireside chat with Zhao who, to mark the occasion, was wearing a personalized football shirt emblazoned with the Binance brand. Scheduled for 45 minutes, Zhao spent most of it explaining how libra and China's digital yuan were unlikely to be competitors to existing stablecoin providers; how Binance's smart chain wouldn't tread on Ethereum's toes — "that depends on the definition of competing," he said — and how Binance had an incentive to keep its newly acquired CoinMarketCap independent from the exchange. There were only five minutes left on the clock.
