Chia hard disk mining
The crypto boom led to an inevitable shortage of video cards in some world regions, as enthusiastic miners went on a panic-buying spree. However, today the market is forecasting an acute shortage of HDD and SSD due to a new crypto player — the Chia token, which can be mined using hard drives. And although mining on hard drives is not as popular as mining on video cards or ASICs, it allows to get coins without noise and dust, as well as without the round-the-clock hum of coolers. Today we will tell you how to mine cryptocurrency on HDD and SSD, which models are suitable for mining, how to mine Chia cryptocurrency step by step, and how to calculate the benefits of this process. All miners remember January , when video cards ran out on retail shelves. Then many wondered: what else can you mine on, besides the GPU?

Ch-ch-ch-Chia! HDD sales soar to record levels as latest crypto craze sweeps Europe
Would you like some storage shortage to go along with the ongoing GPU shortage? The possibility could be on the horizon as Chia, a storage-based cryptocurrency, has allegedly led to the mass purchasing of hard drives and SSDs by miners in China that could potentially trigger a global price hike and hardware shortage in the future.

Thread starter Humza Start date Apr 19, In a nutshell: The crypto-mining craze has traditionally been GPU-focused, however, an emerging cryptocurrency could take its toll on the storage market following reports of early adopters in China mass purchasing high-capacity drives for farming Chia. For now, only enterprise-grade drives are being scooped up, but the coin's success and worldwide traction - which remains to be seen - could also spell trouble for consumer drives down the road.
Cryptos are starting to look like the gray goo: they will self replicate and take over every device with even a single transistor on the face of the earth until nothing remains but nano machines, self replicating to mine for cryptocurrency without any humans left on earth to actually do transactions.
This is how we die everybody. Well not really, we'll probably slowly die out to increasingly more common natural disasters related to global warming while the rich elite escapes to Mars or the moon to live out the rest of their natural lives but hey, crypto is already contributing it's part to that as well.
Reactions: wildrage , Dimitrios , arrowflash and 6 others. This type of currency isn't new and it doesn't really offer any big gains. Reactions: ron baer and terzaerian. I'm done with HDD. I'll probably never use one again.
It's too soon to tell - but I do hope that whatever demand increases come put pressure on the industry to focus on faster, better and cheaper SSD. Even if this not new fake currency is better served with large rust platters, you know all these morons and the noobs trying to get rich quick are going to snatch up all the supply they can.
I hope the whole lot of them are stuck with a bunch of overpriced hardware no one will buy once all this crap crashes. Reactions: PEnnn , barca1au and BadThad. But then again, why does it have to be electronical?
Can't it be something physical? Reactions: JKnight and envirovore. This is how bubble is created. Someone creates something, it's crap but media give it a huge boost. This has zero impact but media will make it a bubble again. Maybe sponsored by drive vendors? Who knows. Who would pay an attention to some github repo otherwise? Reactions: PEnnn and psycros. I can't wait for crypto currency based on toilet flushing XD.

It does both the job of verifying that storage is actually happening, as well as facilitating granular payment to many individuals with varying storage contracts. Or am I missing something? Reactions: terzaerian and NightAntilli. Dimitriid said:. QuantumPhysics said:. Geralt said:.

I just took out an option on all space above 0 to 90 degrees latitude on planet Earth. Dividing it into 'little chunklets" which are then sold into the market based on careful cubic space calculations, I am certain to become a multi-quad-rillionaire in a few weeks. Thanks for letting me know. Setting it up on my laptop right now. Reactions: terzaerian.
Anyone find it alarming how our country is falling apart fast? Is this due to the destruction on purpose from Democrats and China or just China?
Everyday I see this country break down piece by piece brick by brick WTF? Am I going crazy? Reactions: Danny and BadThad. Yes, stupid humans, trying to put a roof over their head and food on their plates and not die of starvation. The nerve! This isn't really all that new Headline is being a bit clickbaity when we all know that if storage prices go up it'll be because of the chip shortage.
Dimitrios said:. Reactions: Dimitrios. Dozens of storage crypto exist. This is why storage crypto will fail. The whole point of storage crypto is to have decentralised storage. When it becomes centralised the users turn away. Ultimately these will all have issues. Not at first. Miners are likely going to be going foe the SLC over-provisioned enterprise drives first.
Poor people are not having mining farms for sure. Poor people are not buying expensive graphics cards. Reactions: NightAntilli. Reactions: BadThad and Dimitrios. The issue with Filecoin is that the barrier to entry is huge. You'll pretty much have to build a system specifically for Filecoin.
SiaCoin has a lower entry barrier, but there seems to be a dispute and issues between team members about the viability of this service. But at least the rest of your system doesn't need to be as powerful as Filecoin. And you have the choice to mine with ASICs to be profitable. But that makes the whole thing convoluted, as you have both hosts for the files and miners for the blockchain validation. Storj is the best of all in that regard, but, it runs on ETH.
You only need 1 CPU core, GB of disk space, and some requirements on your internet connection, which are quite stringent though. Chia in this article, is quite similar to Storj, but, it has its own blockchain, rather than running on ETH. It's also extremely lenient on your internet connection, as opposed to all the other ones. I don't see this putting a strain on consumer storage though. Hardware failure is going to be costly here, so barely anyone would want consumer storage hardware as their first choice.
I doubt hard drives will be a priority at all. Reactions: BadThad and terzaerian. NightAntilli said:. You must log in or register to reply here. Similar threads. Growing concerns as Chia miners attempt to sell potentially degraded plotting drives. Replies 22 Views Sep 6, Puiu.

Chia Kia coin has been listed and traded for one week, and its price fluctuates a lot. The initial mining profit is very high. If the hard disk capacity is large enough, it can be recovered in 10 days, which is far more than that of Ethernet coin mining. Chia is profitable and attracts a lot of people to invest in mining. According to his pictures, there are at least 20 hard disks on display, Considering that the actual price of 16TB hard disk is yuan, it is estimated that at least 40 16TB hard disks with a capacity of more than gb will be used this time. Since Chia mining has the highest demand for hard disk capacity, it has consumed a lot of hard disk in the past more than a month. Previously, the hard disk capacity consumed by Chia Kia coin was only pb, One month's is now over pb, For the first time, it exceeds the level of 1zb, which is several to dozens of times more than the hard disk consumed by the general data center.

Chia – the giant leaf over the hard drive market
Cryptocurrency mining has been making headlines —and not the good kind. An increasing focus has been placed on the environmental impact of crypto mining , particularly the energy-intensive "proof of work" PoW mining employed by Bitcoin and for the time being by Ethereum. Chia aims to change all that, with a novel "proof of space and time" consensus mechanism that uses storage, rather than processing power, to secure the network. Its creators claim that it's more secure, more distributed, and less wasteful than proof of work cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin—and it's already proved popular with miners, who've been snapping up the hard drives required to "farm" it. Here's how it works—and how to get started as a Chia farmer. Chia is a blockchain , digital currency, and smart transaction platform that's intended to facilitate cross-border payments, escrow services and institutional custody.
Chia crypto mining could kill your SSD in 40 days — here’s why
Chia Coin investors began to liquidate the hard drives, used to mine this digital currency, since the fall in their price forced them to accept losses and opt for other financial instruments, reported the Vnexpress portal. Hoang Tuan, owner of a computer store in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, said that selling second-hand hard drives is more difficult than graphics cards because mining in Chia causes a devastating impact in these pieces. It was invented by Bram Cohen, creator of the BitTorrent protocol. According to Cohen, PoST consumes less electricity than its rival, by using storage disk space as a transaction validator. As Chia mining requires a large amount of hard disk space, in April this year, due to the rapid growth in popularity of the digital currency, Occurred a shortage of these units in Hong Kong. However, in May it was revealed that China, positioned as a green alternative to the most popular digital currencies, can end the life of storage drives much earlier than expected and destroy a solid state drive SSD of conventional use in a matter of weeks. How much is Chia mining going to effect HDD or SSD supplies and prices?
Recently, Chia cryptocurrency has been in the headlines for good, as well as bad reasons. This storage-focused cryptocurrency created by BitTorrent creator Bram Cohen has been gaining popularity because it was introduced as a green alternative to Bitcoin mining. The idea behind developing this cryptocurrency was to minimize the carbon footprint that is the biggest problem faced by unsustainable mining practices. Bitcoin mining works on the energy-draining proof of work process. Mining the top digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum is a resource-intensive process. Bitcoin mining, in particular, uses immense quantities of electricity. This is a serious concern and recently in response to this problem, Elon Musk tweeted that Tesla would not accept Bitcoin as payment for its cars.
