Crypto server farm together

This weekend I became a space farmer! All I had to do was donate GB of unused hard drive space to the Chia blockchain. Chia is a rival to Bitcoin and was invented by Bram Cohen, the guy who invented the peer-to-peer file transfer protocol BitTorrent. I wrote:.

With Gaia-X, representatives from business, science and politics on an international level create a proposal for the next generation of data infrastructure: an open, transparent and secure digital ecosystem, where data and services can be made available, collated and shared in an environment of trust.

Gaia-X is a project initiated by Europe for Europe and beyond. Representatives from business, politics, and science from Europe and around the globe are working together, hand in hand, to create a federated and secure data infrastructure. Companies and citizens will collate and share data — in such a way that they keep control over them. They should decide what happens to their data, where it is stored, and always retain data sovereignty. The architecture of Gaia-X is based on the principle of decentralisation.

Gaia-X is the result of a multitude of individual platforms that all follow a common standard — the Gaia-X standard. Together, we are developing a data infrastructure based on the values of openness, transparency, and trust. So, what emerges is not a cloud, but a networked system that links many cloud services providers together. Gaia-X is a common European project: It brings people from different companies, research institutions, associations, administrations, and politics together to work towards a common goal.

Together, they build on the widest spectrum of expertise to co-create the future of the digital infrastructure for Europe - across dedicated data spaces serving the most critical industries. Within these, there are various working groups and committees. The exchange within, between and beyond these pillars towards other stakeholders e. EU Commission, international initiatives is ensured. For more information on the Gaia-X Association including the main objectives, the organisational structure as well as the deliverables and the architectural framework of Gaia-X, please visit www.

Gaia-X will foster and support an open-source Community in which all contributors are invited to participate. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Association, please send an e-mail to aisbl-membership gaia-x.

Gaia-X Hubs are the central contact points for companies, stakeholders, initiatives, associations, and public sector bodies in each country contributing to the Gaia-X project. The aim is to set up one national Gaia-X Hub in each participating country to act as the voice of user ecosystems and to provide a central point of contact to interested parties on a national level. This international community of Hubs aims to nurture a dynamic, grassroots ecosystem that will help to identify relevant user requirements and to conceptualize use cases and to bundle national initiatives.

All Gaia-X Hubs are in close exchange with each other to ensure international alignment regarding their activities, the definition of requirements, and the identification of regulatory hurdles. A future network of Gaia-X Hubs will support the growth of a dynamic ecosystem bottom-up, from the national toward the international level.

Any organisation or company that can provide use cases, expertise, and resources, or which are able to become a stakeholder in the creation of data spaces are welcome to join a Hub. Members of the nationally organised Gaia-X Hubs can contribute to and work on several data spaces and working groups to shape an innovation-friendly data ecosystem on Gaia-X. The membership of all national Gaia-X Hubs is free of charge for all companies and organisations.

You like to contribute? Please contact the spokesperson for your country see below. If a Hub has not yet been established for your country, please contact info gaia-x. In the Gaia-X Hub Germany, the user perspective is represented by many companies and experts. Hub members are organised in the following domain working groups:. It is the explicit goal to expand the scope to further domain working groups that reflect the potential of a sovereign data infrastructure in industry, science, and society.

Moreover, use cases illustrate the need for and the added benefit of a sovereign European data infrastructure. All use cases that have been verified so far are available online in the use case gallery. Everyone interested in shaping the future of the European Digital Economy is invited to contribute.

The Gaia-X Hub Germany contributes to the goals of the European data strategy, especially regarding the development of European data spaces and ecosystems. In addition, it supports the user side in the development of use cases and contributes to the scaling of the Gaia-X services. The local Gaia-X actors can network within the Gaia-X Hub Germany and are supported in their endeavours to promote a sovereign data infrastructure. An enormous digitalization effort is underway in the agri-food sector.

Agricultural and horticultural companies produce an enormous number of products every day, but more and more also a mass of data. But available data are only valuable when shared. Therefore, throughout the entire chain from field to fork, traditional supply companies such as machinery constructors and agrochemists, and new players are positioning themselves on this subject, as the data economy constitutes a new growth driver for them.

They are deploying digital tools and new data-driven applications, aiming as end-user not only farmers or AgriFood business, but also the consumers. To scale up and to make optimal use of this data revolution in the near future, the willingness to share data between all AgriFood supply chain partners is crucial to keep innovating. The spectrum of farms is wide, as also the selection of available digital technologies.

In addition to building trust through consent, there are other challenges to overcome. Access to the digital single market must be guaranteed, data interoperability and portability must be ensured, and the entire chain from farm to fork must be considered.

Gaia-X as an open, transparent and interoperable ecosystem presents an appropriate infrastructure for above mentioned challenges. By enabling sovereign data services, Gaia-X will accelerate digitalization efforts and technological advancements in the agricultural sector. The domain working group Energy is working to identify intelligent solutions for power generation, energy storage, power transmission and consumption monitoring.

The focus is on all areas of potential generated by a federated data infrastructure throughout the value creation chain and contributed to acceleration and support of the energy transition. For that reason, there is also the possibility of building a strong European digital system layer on top of the existing energy system layer which should be seamlessly coupled. Data-driven solutions should result in the energy data room coping with the transition to decarbonised energy and carbon neutrality.

In addition, enabling energy efficiency and sector coupling e. Thanks to data-sharing possibilities between stakeholders, valuable use cases will be addressed so that new services for European citizens and companies can be deployed. Addressing these use cases requires cross-border common data knowledge representations, semantic data models, data collection, and sharing data capabilities. Accessing data in trusted and collaborative cloud infrastructures is compulsory to provide comprehensive offerings under high security standards.

The Gaia-X strategy through the setting of common policy rules will ensure data, data knowledge representation, and services protection, but also interoperability and portability.

These are crucial to reinforce trust and transparency to scale, digitalize and provide new services at a European level. This has prevented them from accelerating the use of trusted cloud and data-based services and ecosystem-based models, that may provide a competitive advantage to the business.

Gaia-X is seen as a European-wide accelerator of innovation, scaling up open innovation and co-construction by providing secured data sharing and artificial intelligence services at scale, in a compliant and secured way. The development of the world economy and its industries - especially those in Europe, depend highly on the availability and accessibility of data.

Thereby spatial data, information, and relationships are of great importance, as most of the High Value data Categories e. Spatial relationships of nearly every data type will lead to extensive leverage effects for economies and markets in different perspectives of sustainable development.

Thus, it makes sense to develop and maintain a general basis. Ideally this is a network of geo platforms, geo services, and methodologies, to serve different industry demands on a technology open, common, and harmonized geo data and geo information basis. Gaia-X geoinformation domain working group mission is to unlock the power of spatial relationships through geo spatial enabling technologies by integration in value adding business processes.

The characteristics of Gaia-X, known as trust, governance, data sovereignty, data portability, and openness will lead to additional value within geo data dissemination, provision, integration, and usage. From a visionary point of view, a horizontal, and value driven network of interconnected, private, and public geo platforms serve the demands of other vertical Gaia-X domain working groups based on Gaia-X principles.

The overall benefit and leverage effect emerge through a geoinformation spread into other Gaia-X domain working groups. This cross-domain approach fosters geo information sharing, creates business value, enforce crowd sourcing, collaboration, innovation, and makes the application of spatial technologies more economical and efficient.

Barely any other area of society has such a directly positive benefit for citizens as the health domain working group. The potential enabled here by digital technology such as networking via cloud infrastructures or artificial intelligence is still a long way from being fully exploited.

For the innovative medicine and healthcare of the future, health data needs to be available from different sources and it must be possible to combine and process this whilst also meeting the highest standards of security. The declared goal of the domain working group Health is to unlock the power of health data and to enable the scale that is essential for research and innovation to thrive within Europe.

Moreover, the domain working group Health aims for a collaboration between health sector stakeholders to establish a Health Data Space using the Gaia-X infrastructural framework in order to access and to share health data securely, confidently, governed, and controlled by each stakeholder in a consistent manner.

This is also done by analysing a variety of digital health applications that are to be implemented with Gaia-X and by identifying domain-specific requirements. The use cases cover the diverse nature of the health sector, with cases from care, research, and the health industry.

For instance, the current issue of coronavirus is also being looked at with use cases. Flexible production value chains are being built dynamically inside the production value network based on bilateral agreements to fulfil specific business objectives. However, this bilateral nature of cooperation hinders multi-stakeholder collaboration down- and upstream the value chain. The domain working group Industry 4. In this context, Gaia-X allows for a sovereign and transparent hosting and processing of Industry 4.

While relying on the Gaia-X infrastructure, the aim of the domain working group Industry 4. The Mobility domain working group is primarily focused on the IT basis of data infrastructures and their further development. The goal is a transparent and secure data infrastructure for cross-domain industrial collaboration. This should promote innovations in vehicle development and operation, enable new services and improve the overall mobility experience. Use cases, e.

Interfaces and usage scenarios from other Gaia-X domain working group are taken into account, because mobility-related data have a high cross-domain relevance. From the domain working group agriculture to energy, health to smart city, new applications can emerge through these data. In turn, the mobility domain working group benefits greatly from geo-information. The data in the domain working group is largely generated by individual mobility and non-public product information from manufacturers and service providers and then flows back into mobility offerings.

This results in a high demand for data security on the one hand and usability on the other. Questions of data sovereignty, authorized use, and partial encryption become the focus. Big data enables AI-powered analytics and tools. The interoperability of the Gaia-X data infrastructure can contribute significantly to sustainable and secure mobility. A connected and technology-open mobility ecosystem enables collaboration between all players along the entire product lifecycle: from manufacturers, suppliers and raw material providers, to sharing economy initiatives and smart service innovations, to intermodal fleet management.

Gaia-X protects personal rights and intellectual property; in line with EU regulations, products, services and processes can be optimized, and safety risks and environmental impacts can be seamlessly captured and reduced in accordance with global and national regulations.

Digital sovereignty means the state's ability to communicate and act digitally. The public administration of the federal, state and municipalities in Germany has set itself the goal of continuously strengthening the digital sovereignty of the administration in its various roles as user, provider and customer of digital technologies by expanding open interfaces, standards and open source solutions, thereby reducing dependencies.

The largest cryptocurrencies — Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Ethereum — require vast amounts of energy consumption to function. Last year, blockchain used more power than individual nations. Unsurprisingly, this is creating a huge environmental problem that poses a threat to the Paris climate-change accord. An immediate fix is providing miners with incentives to use solar power or other green energy sources when processing transactions. Developers also need to think long and hard before creating new Proof of Work blockchains because the more successful they become, the worse ecological impact they may have. Blockchain has the power to change our world for the better in so many ways. It can provide unbanked people with digital wallets, prevent fraud, and replace outdated systems with more efficient ones. But we still need this new and improved world to be one that we want to live in. Last year, blockchain used more power than individual nations including Uruguay, Nigeria, and Ireland.

Crypto Farms a Lot of Hot Air?

In one sense they are correct. Crypto farmers cram massive amounts of computing density into tiny spaces. These banks of servers generate hot air in large quantities the successful ones transform it into a lucrative revenue source.

Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas, Bloomberg quickly and accurately delivers business and financial information, news and insight around the world. The site made sense for running servers 24 hours a day because it has access to low-cost electricity generated by water flowing from the nearby Caucasus Mountains. There also are plans for solar panels and wind turbines. Renewable energy is becoming the preferred way of mining digital currencies like Bitcoin as prices surge and the industry seeks more computing power.

The future of blockchain is near and banking isn't the only industry affected.

The decentralized nature of Bitcoin means that transactions are broadcasted to the peer-to-peer network and once broadcasted, needs to be verified, confirming that the transaction is valid and then having the transaction recorded on the public transaction database, which is known as the Bitcoin blockchain. Miners basically are the people involved in the processing and verifying transactions before then recording the transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain. Computers are used to include new transactions onto the Bitcoin exchange and while computers will find it relatively easy to complete the verification process, the process becomes more difficult as computer capability becomes more sophisticated with faster processing speeds. Bitcoin protocol requires those looking to include additional blocks of transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain to provide proof that the user expanded a scarce resource, in the case of mining being the processing power of the computers used for the verification process. Miners compete with everyone on the peer-to-peer network to earn Bitcoins. The faster the processing power, the more attempts are made by the hardware to attempt to complete the verification, and therefore earning the miner the Bitcoins that are highly sought after along with transaction fees. The Bitcoin network is self-evolving, to ensure that the time taken for a miner to win a block is steady at approximately 10 minutes.
