Hydrogen buses to hit the roads soon

The start-up says its vision is to build technology solutions for sustainable mobility with a current focus on hydrogen-powered technologies. It has identified bottlenecks in battery technology, fuel cell tech, and technologies for hydrogen generation. In addition to the hydrogen fuel cell technology, it also indigenously designed and developed from ground up other key components like balance of plant, powertrain, and battery pack.

These components have been deployed on a 9-meter, seater, air-conditioned bus. The e-bus is said to have a range of km utilising 30kg of hydrogen. A modular architecture allows for changes in the design to suit requirements of range and operating conditions.

The fuel cell utilises hydrogen and air to generate electricity to power the bus. The only effluent from the bus is water, therefore making it possibly the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation. For comparison, a single diesel bus plying on long-distance routes typically emits tonne of CO2 annually and there are over a million such buses in India.

Generating hydrogen from agri-waste can provide an alternative source of revenue to farmers, replacing diesel buses with Hydrogen Fuel Cell buses will improve air quality drastically and also reduce oil import costs. Ravi Pandit, chairman, Sentient Labs said, "We are proud to launch an indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell power bus.

This will go a long way in powering Hydrogen Mission, AatmaNirbhar Bharat and importantly sustainable mobility. We envision that the solution will see wide-spread adoption powered by several partnerships.

Our efforts will also be pivotal in enabling vehicle makers and suppliers to build a net-zero carbon path in India. At Sentient, challenges that are core to India are understood, and solutions are developed. Digitisation, decentralisation and decarbonisation is what India needs for sustainable mobility and these innovations from Sentient will go a long way.

Fuel cell buses: Best practices and commercialisation approaches

KG Geldhauser. The two bus operators will take turns running the Elec City Fuel Cell bus on existing routes in Munich, carrying actual passengers. The bus can travel over kilometers when fully charged. Hyundai Motor plans to run demos with four more bus operators this year, collecting passenger and driver feedback along the way. Through the demo runs, the company expects to prove hydrogen-powered buses as a viable, efficient solution for commercial transportation. Elec City Fuel Cell has been commercially available in Korea since and a total of units have been put into operation.

The vehicles are powered by electricity that is generated when hydrogen gas and oxygen from the air react within a fuel cell. The buses can be.

A two-year-old project to run 51 hydrogen buses in the French city of Montpellier and its environs has been cancelled for being too expensive after elected officials realised that electric buses would be six times cheaper to run. However, it would be six times more expensive than with electric buses. So, for the moment, we are giving up on hydrogen buses; we will see in if hydrogen is cheaper. Green hydrogen is an inherently inefficient and expensive solution for road transport as it requires renewable electricity for electrolysis to create the H 2 , more power to compress the gas, which needs to be stored in large tanks, an expensive filling station is required to pump the stored hydrogen into a vehicle, where a fuel cell converts the H 2 back into electricity. It is much more efficient and cheaper to pump the renewable electricity directly into a vehicle battery. Hydrogen advocates argue that fuel-cell electric vehicles are less heavy than battery-powered ones, can be charged more quickly and can run for more kilometres on a single charge. China is currently the world leader in electric buses, with more than , on the country's roads.

When it comes to developing hydrogen as a green technology of the future, we are not only drivers of innovation in Austria but also pioneers in the industry. Initial successful trials in scheduled bus services clearly show we are on the right track and ready to make regular use of these buses. The bus runs on a hydrogen-powered electric motor. Energy is generated in the fuel cell installed in the vehicle by means of a chemical reaction that takes place through the supply of oxygen. A major difference between this and battery-powered buses is that power is generated directly in the vehicle.

BAE Systems, a leader in platform electrification is using their proven series electric propulsion system to advance zero-emission bus technology. The all-electric propulsion system is best known for dramatically improving the efficiency and fuel economy of more than 14, transit buses worldwide. Now a derivative of that system is being used to advance electrification in transit producing a wide range of benefits including the full electrification of vehicle accessories and enabling zero-emission buses with hydrogen fuel cell technology. Power is blended from the high voltage batteries and hydrogen fuel cell engine through power electronics to provide propulsion at the wheels and to energize electrified accessories. Regenerative braking is utilized to capture kinetic energy during braking and store it in the high voltage batteries.

Now, the agency continues to grow its sustainable transportation technology. Over the course of three months, the agencies filled five buses back-to-back in less than an hour and completed 52 consecutive fills of at least 25kgs in The program consists of groups committed to clean alternative fuel solutions for the transportation industry. The agency may have joined in , but it all started in Conrad says the interest only grew once he was introduced to the renewable hydrogen energy cycle. Ohio has the third largest fuel cell supply chain in the country.

The fuel cell uses hydrogen and air to generate electricity to power the bus. The only emission from the vehicle is water.

This FC bus model name: Toyota FC Bus will be put into operation as a Toei route bus in March along with a second bus that is scheduled for delivery in the same month. The increased use of FC buses in urban areas is expected to help raise the level of understanding by the general public regarding the use of FC buses as a form of public transportation. The Toyota Fuel Cell System TFCS 1 , which was developed for the Mirai fuel cell vehicle FCV , has been adopted to provide better energy efficiency in comparison with internal combustion engines, as well as to deliver superior environmental performance with no CO 2 emissions or Substances of Concern SoC emitted when driving. In addition, the FC Bus is compliant with Non-Step Standards 2 , making for easy boarding and exiting by elderly people and young children. The bus also uses a high-capacity external power supply system.

Public transport plays an important role in improving air quality in cities and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the EU.

NREL's technology validation team evaluates fuel cell electric buses to provide comprehensive, unbiased evaluation results of fuel cell bus development and performance compared to conventional baseline vehicles. Transit buses are one of the best early transportation applications for fuel cell technology. Buses operate in congested areas where pollution is already a problem. These buses are centrally located and fueled, highly visible, and subsidized by government. By evaluating the experiences of these early adopters, NREL can determine the status of bus fuel cell systems and establish lessons learned to aid other fleets in implementing the next generation of these systems. A joint plan describes these evaluations, and the table below summarizes both current and planned projects. This table shows the estimated timing for all of NREL's zero emission bus evaluations, which include both fuel cell electric and battery electric buses.
