Twitter is rolling out verified NFT profile pictures

Are you skeptical about cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and blockchains? Or perhaps not. Well, Twitter has made it possible to customize your profile by linking your Twitter account to NFTs that you own. When you do so, your profile picture changes from a round to a hexagonal shape. It should surprise nobody that Twitter is so bullish about crypto in general.

One of its founders, Jack Dorsey, is a major player himself in the crypto world. So an account with a hexagonal-shaped profile picture means that the owner of the account holds NFTs and is a member of that scene. In case you want nothing to do with crypto and NFTs, this will let you know who to unfollow.

The reverse is also true, of course. Twitter does not provide a way of verifying whether an NFT is original or fake. Some digital artists have complained that the new feature will aid the theft of their work. Twitter Spaces are about being in the moment, but those who are late to the party don't have to miss out.

Kariuki is a Nairobi based writer. His entire life has been spent trying to string together the perfect sentence. He is still trying. He has published extensively in Kenyan media and, for a hot 7 years or so, dived into the world of Public Relations where he discovered the corporate world is just like high school.

He now writes again, focusing mainly on the magical internet. He also dabbles in the vibrant Kenyan start-up scene, AKA the Silicon Savannah, and occasionally advises small businesses and political actors on how to communicate better to their audiences. He runs a YouTube channel called Tipsy Writers, which attempts to get storytellers to tell their untold stories over a beer.

When not working, Kariuki enjoys taking long walks, watching classic movies - especially old James Bond movies - and spotting aircraft. In an alternate universe, he would probably be a fighter pilot.

EXPLAINER: How to Display Your NFT Avatar on Twitter

Now, after months of anticipation, Twitter has released an official verification mechanism for NFT profile pictures. Choose an NFT, and your profile picture — typically enclosed within a circle — will get a nifty new hexagonal border. If a pesky right-clicker tries to use your NFT as their profile picture without first buying the token, they will still be able to use the image, but they will be stuck with the classic circle frame. A look at Twitter's NFT integration. Of course, a truly committed right-clicker might simply re-upload that same image to an NFT platform, mint a visually identical NFT and use that as their profile picture instead, complete with a hexagonal frame signifying ownership on the blockchain.

El Salvador protest breaks out against Bitcoin adoption

Investing or trading Bitcoin only requires an account at a service or an exchange, although further safe storage practices are recommended. There are several things that aspiring Bitcoin investors need: a cryptocurrency exchange account, personal identification documents if you are using a Know Your Customer KYC platform, a secure connection to the Internet, and a method of payment. It is also recommended that you have your own personal wallet outside of the exchange account. Valid methods of payment using this path include bank accounts, debit cards, and credit cards. Privacy and security are important issues for Bitcoin investors. Anyone who gains the private key to a public address on the Bitcoin blockchain can authorize transactions. Private keys should be kept secret—criminals may attempt to steal them if they learn of large holdings. Be aware that anyone can see the balance of a public address you use.
