Chia is taking the digital currency world by storm. Founded by Bram Cohen, the brains behind BitTorrent, it promises to build on — and expand — all the benefits of other currencies like BitCoin. The demand for Chia storage is exploding, and Polycloud offers one of the most competitive solutions for Chia cloud storage. Keep reading. The Chia Network is a new cryptocurrency that uses storage space to secure its transactions, instead of energy-intensive computations. The point: Making money with Chia is accessible and environmentally friendly — all you need is some fast cloud storage.

The Magnet 28: It’s more fun to be a chia farmer than a bitcoin miner

This weekend I became a space farmer! All I had to do was donate GB of unused hard drive space to the Chia blockchain. Chia is a rival to Bitcoin and was invented by Bram Cohen, the guy who invented the peer-to-peer file transfer protocol BitTorrent.

I wrote:. If you opt in, the Chia Network will essentially populate that unused space with bingo cards. He generated interest in the fledgling network by seeding it with free pornography.

Today, BitTorrent is used by more than million people a month and, according to the company, is responsible for up to 40 percent of global internet traffic, much of it pirated movies and TV shows. Yesterday I downloaded the Chia Blockchain so I could become a space farmer.

Once your computer goes through the time-consuming task of plotting, it will start farming the plots, which uses very little computation.

One hypothesis was that perhaps the models were outperforming the experts because of a kind of wisdom of the crowd effect: that a single model was aggregating the judgments of a whole group of experts, so of course it would outperform any single expert in isolation. The practical possibilities for such quick-and-easy improper [that is, non-weighted] models seemed endless.

Dawes immediately imagined the simplest model he could think of: a good marriage, he figured, should probably involve more sex than fights. A positive difference predicted happiness, a negative one unhappiness. My friend Kent Barnes sent me a link to a Chinese electric car maker called Belyoo.

You can order its cars via AliExpress. They sell several models designed to look like old VW microbuses. The Changlis look much better. As I was reading it, I wondered why so many of the characters got sick and died. Wuthering Heights was one of the books I thought I should have read in high school but missed because I was too busy reading comic books and science fiction paperbacks.

Last week any remaining guilt I had about avoiding the classics when I was a teenager was wiped out when I had an email conversation with my friend Matt Maranian , a writer and designer in Vermont. Matt wrote:. Sometimes you need to know things to appreciate a book like Moby Dick or another classic, you need to know things about history and geography and art or literature or just living and the human experience and it would have read like gibberish to me at any other point of my life up until now.

Are you discovering this too? I think Matt is right. I tried reading Moby Dick more than once in my 20s, and abandoned it each time. I met Dan Kimball in He told me his younger brother Tommy, who lived in New Jersey, was a great guitar player. Dan was trying to talk Tommy into moving from New Jersey to Ft.

Collins to start a band. About a year later Tommy drove out with everything he owned packed into his car. He was rail-thin, had black hair and piercing blue eyes, and smoked incessantly. He was a huge misanthrope but we got along and eventually, he became one of my closest friends. Dan was right — Tommy was a brilliant guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Tommy was the lead singer and guitarist, Dan was the drummer, and I played bass and sang background vocals.

We played at bars and clubs in Ft. Collins, Boulder, and Denver, and when I graduated from school we moved to London and played at clubs and pubs there, too. After the band broke up we moved to different parts of the country. Dan and I stayed in touch over the years, but Tommy and I did not. On Saturday while I was eating lunch Dan texted me and told me Tommy had died.

Tommy was shy, sensitive, extremely intelligent, and antisocial, and though he recorded a lot of music after The Elephant Boys broke up, he didn't share it with anyone. Click the link we sent to , or click here to log in.

HOWTO: Chia Farming on SCALE

How to Raspberry. Yeah, it was inevitable. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out my farm, but I got it running! The game with chia is not proof of work, like most currencies, but proof of space. In short, you use a powerful CPU to create G files called plots, and then a less powerful computer to read the plot files and offer them to the Internet. These plots are like lottery tickets—if you create more and more of them, you increase your chances of winning a Chia coin. The troubles are many.

A Chia farmer quickly turning this hobby from a spare space intrigue to a home lab mania. How viable is it to plot on that old dusty machine in your closet? As the Chia cryptocurrency explodes in popularity with many people looking to become new farmers, so does the network's total net space. This has created a plotting pressure for everyone looking to make some money, either in generating plots on spare storage in hopes of landing a few lucky coins on occasion, or those looking to scale up a large-sized farm of multiple petabytes. In either scenario, the chances of landing the block rewards are getting lower for a given set of plots so the sooner you have your plots created, the more you'll end up being rewarded. If you're like me and many other folks out there, that might mean reaching for an old desktop or laptop to see how it can help your efforts. However, older machines obviously won't plot as well, but the question becomes how optimized they can be and ultimately if it is a worthwhile endeavor. The short answer is yes, but odds are you'll be a piece or 2 of hardware away from it being worth your time.

Once you have one or more plots you are ready to start harvesting them. Harvesting can be thought of like playing bingo. The plots are the bingo cards and the.

Pools for the Chia Blockchain have begun and released to the mainnet as of a few days ago. As i have been setting up and replotting like everyone else i found that while i am plotting as fast as i can with two computers using MadMax Plotter , my response times are suffering because of the CPU power required to produce a plot using madmax resulting in fewer partials being submitted. Today i will fix that using a Raspberry Pi 4 to ensure times are submitted quickly and we get a good stream of points to our pools. First and foremost we will need the Chia Blockchain and wallet synced on the Raspberry Pi.
