When it comes to technology skills, there are three areas future lawyers can focus on in particular to elevate their ability to serve their clients and make legal decisions. A lawyer that knows how to code knows how to solve problems. I learned how to code in college and understanding how a computer works and software is built served me well during my time as a patent attorney.
I was able to talk to inventors on their level and understand their goals. In my course on designing legal apps, students develop these skills through building a software application to solve a legal problem. Lawyers who understand blockchain technology will be able to navigate the legal risks and opportunities of the not-so-distant future. For example, advances in artificial intelligence that uses data to build predictive models have given rise to privacy concerns that put data collection practices in the legal spotlight. Lawyers must understand how to consume and interpret data, how their clients use it to inform their decisions, and how it can be used to shape their legal strategies.
While future lawyers must prioritize understanding the law, become excellent writers, and work extremely hard, they must also understand that the law does not exist in a vacuum.
