Slate mining in Wales
Slate as Dimension Stone pp Cite as. Slate has been mined in open-pit quarries and underground mines. The different methods of exploitation and common terms are explained in this chapter. Before mining begins, geoscientific exploration and a mining plan has to be established. The chapter describes the steps within the geological investigation, leading to a geological model as a prerequisite for a subsequent rock mass classification such as the RMR value Rock Mass Rating and the GSI Geological Strength Index and a final geotechnical model of the slate deposit.
Rock failures and related geotechnical safety aspects during mining of the slate deposit are defined. The investigation is completed by the explanation and illustration of the stress distribution and rock-mechanical behaviour of the planned excavations which are crucial for mine stability. Two examples for room and pillar design of underground mines are introduced. These explanations are accompanied by the description of failure criteria such as the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion.
These criteria assume a rock-mechanically isotropic rock and since slate is a rock-mechanically anisotropic rock, the Ubiquitous-Joint Model is applied. Mining of slate is followed by the more or less immediate production of different slate products, mostly of roofing slate. The production ranges from a very basic and simple manner to a production with automats or by means of robots with few manpower involved only.

Several tons of slate have already been removed from the Collyweston mine since production started in April last year. The property was internationally significant not only for the export of slates, but also for the export of technology and skilled workers from the s to the early 20th century. It played a leading role in the field and constituted a model for other slate quarries in different parts of the world. It offers an important and remarkable example of interchange of materials, technology and human values.

Crews of experienced quarrymen extract slate slabs of up to eight tons from the quarry. Each slab, following its extraction, is carefully handled and moved from the quarry to one of our manufacturing facilities where it is cut, split and shaped into its final product state before being shipped to customers. Once the enormous slabs of slate have been cut loose in the quarry, they must be handled with the utmost sensitivity and care. Every moment following the original cleaving of slate slabs is critical. After the massive chunks of slate are cut loose from the quarry, they are split or cut down into more manageable blocks. Once the blocks have been prepared, they are hoisted out of the quarry by crane and steel cable or loaded on trucks with an excavator.
