For example, to improve traceability in agriculture value chains, a decentralized ledger can help to connect inputs, suppliers, producers and buyers. Blockchain and Open Data share similar principles, such as the promotion of transparency, equality in information knowledge and access, as well as the reorganisation of data exchange between a number of parties. Blockchain can also be very useful in helping overcome organisational and technological boundaries between entities that want to automate the exchange of data. It provides strong data security and is highly resilient against cyber-attacks. Both these qualities are desirable in open data platforms, because they build a foundation of trust in the data. In it they give an overview of blockchain and introduce the possible areas of impact for Agriculture. They also highlight capacities which people working with data need in order to engage with blockchain. The Data for Agriculture Data4Ag project focuses on data use to benefit smallholder farmers. Digital Agriculture
With the growing adoption of the Internet of Things IoT , connected devices have penetrated every aspect of our life , from health and fitness, home automation, automotive and logistics, to smart cities and industrial IoT. Thus, it is only logical that IoT, connected devices, and automation would find its application in agriculture, and as such, tremendously improve nearly every facet of it. How could one still rely on horses and plows when self-driving cars and virtual reality are no longer a sci-fi fantasy but an everyday occurrence? Farming has seen a number of technological transformations in the last decades, becoming more industrialized and technology-driven. By using various smart agriculture gadgets, farmers have gained better control over the process of raising livestock and growing crops, making it more predictable and improving its efficiency.

Even though blockchain technology gained traction because of its role in the financial sector, it has a vast range of applications beyond cryptocurrencies. The technology is set to drastically transform many industries, including healthcare, law, real estate, banking, etc. However, one little-explored industry that blockchain has the potential to revolutionize completely is agriculture. More importantly, it has a growing number of issues that we urgently need to solve.
