Since China outlawed cryptocurrency mining in June , neighbouring country Kazakhstan had become a significant location for Bitcoin miners. The expanse of space, warehouses and factories meant that mining rigs could be easily installed and powered at a lower cost than other Bitcoin-hungry locations. However, Alan Dorjiyev, president of the National Association of Blockchain and Data Centres Industry in Kazakhstan, believes that the issues experienced by Bitcoin miners in the country are now over. He says there is no threat of further internet shutdowns, but should accessibility issues occur, mining farmers are considering satellite options to ensure there is a reserve connection to the internet. Not everyone in Kazakhstan is as positive as Dorjiyev about the future of Bitcoin mining in the country.

Bitcoin miners caught in internet blackout amid bloodshed in Kazakhstan. Bitcoin's global computing power has been dealt a blow this week, after a nationwide internet blackout in Kazakhstan hit the cryptocurrency mining industry. Russian troops have been flown into the central Asian country to combat unrest which has left dozens dead and seen government buildings ransacked.

In , it became the world's second-largest centre for bitcoin mining after the United States, as China clamped down on crypto mining activity. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are created or "mined" by high-powered computers, usually at data centres around the world, which compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles in an energy-intensive process.

In August last year, Kazakhstan accounted for 18 per cent of the global "hash rate" — crypto lingo for the amount of computing power used by computers connected to the bitcoin network. Months earlier, before China's latest clampdown on bitcoin mining, the figure was just 8 per cent.

Kazakhstan is experiencing its worst street protests in three decades. Protests which began over increases to fuel prices have evolved into broader anti-government riots, with a police officer reportedly beheaded and protesters "liquidated" by security forces.

Earlier this week the country was hit with what monitoring site Netblocks called "a nation-scale internet blackout" which prevented Kazakhstan-based miners from accessing the bitcoin network. Groups of miners in different parts of the world, like AntPool and F2Pool, team up to produce bitcoin.

On Thursday, hash rate among the groups was down around 14 per cent from its level two days earlier, according to data from mining firm BTC. More miners using the network means a greater amount of computer power is needed to mine new bitcoin. The hash rate will fall if miners drop off the network, making it easier for the remaining miners to produce new coin. Kazakhstan's crypto mining farms are mostly powered by ageing coal plants which, along with coal mines and the towns built around them, are a headache for authorities seeking to decarbonise the economy.

Last year, the Kazakh government said it would crack down on unregistered "grey" miners who it claimed were consuming twice as much power as the "white" officially registered miners. The country's energy ministry said grey mining might be consuming up to 1. Gold has miners because people want gold and it just so happens, unfortunately, that most gold is deep in the earth. Bitcoin has miners because people want bitcoins, but something here seems silly: how did a bunch of bitcoins, the tokens of a man made invention, end up locked up in circumstances demanding mining? When gold is mined, nothing is achieved beyond the discovery of new gold. When bitcoins are mined, however, a valuable service is provided to the Bitcoin network: decentralized transaction recordation and validation. Bitcoin relies on miners to record and validate transactions because of a particular problem inherent in any system of digital currency: double spending. Double spending is the high-tech incarnation of counterfeiting. In the physical world, probably.
