Chia mining craze is causing massive hard drive shortages in China
Motherboard manufacturers in China are getting in on the cryptomining craze surrounding Chia, a new cryptocurrency available to mine in May. Drive hoarding may be partially responsible for high prices, but clearly, motherboard manufacturers expect storage mining to catch on. At a guess, however, these plugs are designed for cables as opposed to mounting nearly three dozen hard drives in a vertical configuration. The motherboard uses SATA backplanes to provide power and electricity simultaneously.
The manufacturer behind this motherboard, Onda, is reportedly offering it with a custom chassis and an W power supply. The board is based on a B chipset and offers two six-pin connectors to provide additional power.
ET regrets the errors. Be advised that this motherboard is not ATX. Standard ATX boards are mm x mm. This board is mm by mm. The dimensions are larger than even the theoretical WTX standard at mm x mm. If you had a vague plan to buy storage in the next few months, we recommend buying it now.
The problem is, ongoing cryptocurrency shortages continue to break things. Storage is another problem altogether. It may be possible to stop a GPU from mining, but good luck preventing a hard drive from storing data. Other cryptocurrencies based on storage solutions use a solution called proof of capacity. Proof of capacity allows a user to re-use the same hard drive space.
Chia uses proof of spacetime, which requires that an end-user maintain or add capacity over time in order to increase payout rates. Your payout is calculated based on the percentage of the total storage pool that belongs to you. Should Chia take off, it could drive shortages in storage the way Ethereum mining has caused shortages in GPUs.
GPU prices have been elevated, to one degree or another, for 28 of the past 59 months. If this same pattern hits storage, the window for buying components may be much smaller than in the past, and much harder to predict. OEMs should remain insulated from this problem for now, since they buy on contract. Should Chia prove successful, the PC retail channel will be further harmed as another critical system component becomes impossible for most to afford. If you have storage upgrades you want to make, and you can afford to make them now, we recommend you do so, as a precautionary measure against future near-term price increases that could stick around for months, depending on how everything shakes out.

The Chia Network recently launched. The goal of this blog is to tie together all of the notes to building your first Chia Plotter and Farmer. Put simply, plotting is a process to create plots on your hard drive. Your share of Chia cryptocurrency is a percentage based on how much of the total storage of the network you contribute.

Computer Peripheral. Phone Peripheral. Smart Life. Outdoor Power Station. Chia coin uses hard disks to mine. The larger the hard disk capacity is, the more coins can be mined. The large-capacity hard disks on the market have been swept away, which also triggered a wave of shortages in the entire industry. HDD Mining, also known as "storage mining", is the process of obtaining encrypted currency based on hard disk storage. Unlike traditional mining based on graphics processing units also known as GPU mining , hard disk miners use hard disks to generate new data blocks in the distributed ledger and receive rewards. In terms of assembly and maintenance, hard drive mining farms are almost the same as traditional mining farms.
Mining Chia cryptocurrency on SSD and HDD
Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency, has a problem: It uses ghastly quantities of electricity and thus generates as much carbon emissions as a medium-sized country. This is by design. A new cryptocurrency, Chia, avoids this problem—in favor of creating huge amounts of a different kind of waste. Bitcoin was meant to be decentralized so as to stay out of any central control. You enter this lottery by guessing numbers and running calculations on them as fast as possible—that is, you waste electricity to show your commitment.

Bundle overview Instructions How it works Chia mining is fundamentally different from popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Instead of using computational resources to validate the blockchain, Chia relies on storage space. The more storage you can provide, the higher your odds of winning the validation process for a Chia block. To mine Chia effectively, more storage is better. Unlike Bitcoin, you don't need a powerful and expensive graphics card to mine Chia. You only need a computer to create what's known as a plot — a large file that you'll need to start harvesting Chia.

Andrewcw wrote: Oh man i just had a bad thought. So since you have people installing little miners onto zombie computers. What happens when they start doing this proof of space crap onto them. And combine it with the ability to kill SSD's. Seems like NAS malware would be a perfect vector for getting cheap and free Chia for these assholes. IceStorm wrote: It's not quite as bad as GPU mining, but it certainly isn't "green", and even if you're using higher endurance NVMe drives, the drives won't last longer than about a year. Chia eating SSDs may make it worse, given the embodied energy of the SSDs and the waste streams created by manufacturing and disposal. I'm up to 17 plots now.
Today, Russia's central bank announced the possible banning of the use and any sorts of crypto mining Maybe I was lucky enough to find the sweet spot for undervolting and OC - most of the existing reviews are based on stock voltage and clock settings, and hence do not show the full mining potential of the card. Open Windows Settings. If I recall correctly, one can disable certain algos from mining, no?
