Magazine claims to have discovered creator of Bitcoin

PM covers a broad spectrum of issues relevant to all sections of Australia's geographically and culturally diverse community. Will Ockenden reported this story on Friday, March 7, The American news magazine Newsweek today claimed to have found the crypto-currency's creator, revealing his identity as a year-old Japanese-American man. Crypto-currencies exploded into existence several years ago, after the publication of a research paper simply called Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.

Until now the author of that paper, and the original programmer of the software which runs Bitcoin was unknown. But like the currency itself, many questions still remain unanswered. The revelations resulted in a car chase across Los Angeles, an outright denial, and then a demand for a free lunch. Will Ockenden reports. It's very anarchic. It is: who the hell is Satoshi Nakamoto? In , seemingly out of nowhere, a research paper was published which laid out the technical details that run Bitcoin.

Satoshi Nakamoto was the name on top of that paper. In , the Bitcoin "genesis block" was created. In crypto-currencies, the "genesis block" is the birth of a digital coin, the first one to pop into virtual existence. It surprised few when the name Satoshi Nakamoto appeared as the creator of that block, making the mysterious figure the father of Bitcoin. In the early years, Satoshi Nakamoto was active on Bitcoin forums.

Then he simply disappeared. Theories range from an army of libertarian hackers who wanted to bring down governments, to a nation state sick of the dominance of the United States dollar. So after so many years of speculation, it created somewhat of a ripple when American weekly publication Newsweek today claimed it has found the creator of Bitcoin. His real name: Satoshi Nakamoto. Why we you involved in Bitcoin?

The AP reporter took him to lunch at a local sushi restaurant, where Satoshi Nakamoto denied everything. After lunch the chase continued to the Associated Press offices in downtown Los Angeles.

I don't know anything about it. It's unknown who paid for the lunch. Will Ockenden with that report. Search AM The full story More to add? Images Click an image to enlarge. Follow us Podcasts Subscribe to our Daily or Story podcast. All About Podcasting.

Many Satoshi Nakamotos Have Come Up; Who is the Real One?

This piece is the second in our 3-part series on Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. In part 1 we provided an introduction to Satoshi and why he is so revered, and in part 2 we look at the top Satoshi Nakamoto candidates, including the evidence for and against them. A Caltech alumnus, Finney was one of the very first cypherpunks, joining the mailing list in the early s, and also worked at the PGP Corporation. His cypherpunk postings show the same distinctly libertarain leanings as Satoshi Nakamoto, but then the same could have been said for many of the others on the mailing list before and since. This is particularly important because RPOW is the foundation on which Bitcoin is built, which for many represents the biggest clue that Finney created Bitcoin. Finney was one of the few individuals who read the Bitcoin whitepaper and recognized its potential over the previous failed versions of digital money. He worked with Satoshi to build the protocol up into a public version in just a few weeks, suggesting bug fixes over email.

Nelson's argument, which he laid out in a video, is that Mochizuki showed a level of intelligence and breadth of knowledge that was similar to the pseudonymous Bitcoin creator, who went by the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Nelson pointed out that like Nakamoto, who introduced Bitcoin to the world and then disappeared without a trace Mochizuki did much the same thing after his famous proof last year.
