Yale, Wharton, and Haas have become the first higher education institutes to offer blockchain courses. The introduction of these courses is being attributed to a growing student interest in cryptocurrency and from businesses looking to hire graduates with a good knowledge of the blockchain. The Haas school of business is set to select 60 students from relevant courses to study the potential of blockchain technology. A large number of Ivy League graduates end up working in finance, and the blockchain has become an increasingly prominent subject among financial circles in recent years. The high value of currencies like Bitcoin has boosted the popularity of cryptography courses which are more open, too. Stanford University Professor Dan Boneh has received a multitude of applications for his course, Computer Security and Cryptography , which is second in popularity only to machine learning.

A New Competitor for Bitcoin Aims to Be Faster and Safer
In this paper we introduce a game-theoretic model for reward functions in Bitcoin mining pools. Our model consists only of an unordered history of reported shares and gives participating miners the strategy choices of either reporting or delaying when they discover a share or full solution. We defined a precise condition for incentive compatibility to ensure miners strategy choices optimize the welfare of the pool as a whole. With this definition we show that proportional mining rewards are not incentive compatible in this model. We introduce and analyze a novel reward function which is incentive compatible in this model.

Cryptocurrency has arrived in academia, and not just as a backdoor to financial aid. Coinbase , the San Francisco-based online platform for buying selling, transferring and digital currency, recently partnered with Qriously , one of the largest consumer research organizations in the world, to learn more about how cryptocurrency has made an impact in higher education. What did they find? According to the Coinbase Blog , there is a growing interest in crypto and blockchain courses. Coinbase has revealed the inaugural recipients of its Crypto Community Fund developer grants. Coinbase said 0xB10C, the creator of mempool. They will also continue to publish research and work on Bitcoin code review. Barbosa, who only just recently lost his funding from mining company Bitmain, will work on a user interface for Bitcoin Core that will allow its users to access advanced functions without having to use the command line — a coding interface that allows you to talk to your computer to make it interact with applications in the form of text lines. Barbosa, along with a handful of other Bitcoin developers, recently had funding cut off from Bitcoin mining behemoth Bitmain. As evidenced by Barbosa hopping from one grant to another, open-source work is fraught with financial uncertainty, and even the best Bitcoin developers may be funded for their work only partially or not at all. In addition to these sponsorships, some of the more prolific developers have attracted donations from Bitcoin users on GitHub.

Improving security requires both empirically-grounded insights into existing systems and threats, as well as theoretically-grounded solutions that anticipate how future users and attackers will adapt. I will present examples of both from my own research. I'll begin by introducing empirical methods that I created to bring quantitative rigor to the question of how users choose authentication secrets PINs, passwords, and security questions , a topic that has long been misunderstood due to a lack of data. I will then present two theoretically-grounded approaches that apply cryptography to provide transparency that trusted authorities are behaving correctly.
