As of this writing, Crypto is considered the worst Legend in Apex Legends. Unlike Wattson, Crypto has yet to receive a rework. Season 11 had all the Wattson rework, new weapons, an elaborate map, but there is no Crypto skillset streamlining nor a buff, even in minute ones. If you have Legend coins lying around, you should probably spend them with other legends instead of buying him off.

Crypto is one of only a handful of recon-oriented characters in Apex Legends, and thanks to his versatile and powerful surveillance drone, there is simply no one better when it comes to situational awareness.

With Crypto, you must master control of both the man and the drone. A tough task, to be sure, but our Apex Legends Crypto guide will help you with all sorts of practical tips and tidbits on how to use his skillset and abilities effectively. Crypto's principal ability is of course the Surveillance Drone tactical, which gives his entire team an unprecedented level of access to information on enemy whereabouts in the area.

The obvious drawback is that while piloting this drone Crypto is vulnerable - so already we can see that this is a character all about situational awareness and careful planning. While Crypto lacks any sort of abilities that might help him during a firefight such as Wraith's Into the Void or Bangalore's Double Time passive , he is not entirely defenceless. His Ultimate, which must be activated from his drone, will charge up and unleash a powerful EMP over a large radius, damaging and slowing down enemies.

As such Crypto also has good initiation potential, and seems to live for the moments just before the fight starts.

Now it's time to take a proper look at each of Crypto's abilities. As with all Legends, Crypto enjoys a Passive, Tactical, and Ultimate ability - but unlike some, all of his abilities feed directly into one another.

Let's take a look at each ability in turn. Crypto's Passive, much like his Ultimate, is bound up with his primary Tactical ability, Surveillance Drone. Without Neurolink, the drone wouldn't be nearly as useful as it is, nor as interesting. Simply put, it is what enables the drone to highlight any enemies that it sees whether or not you're piloting it , and what allows your entire team to see those highlighted enemies - even through walls. Crypto's bread-and-butter ability is his Tactical, Surveillance Drone, which sends up a drone into the sky or on the floor if you wish to scout the immediate vicinity for enemies.

While piloting the drone Crypto himself remains stationary, and you can switch from drone to Crypto on the fly, or recall the drone in order to deploy it elsewhere.

Crypto's Ultimate ability, Drone EMP, is the only one of his trinity of powers that can actually be used offensively - and it's pretty powerful. Using this ability takes 3 seconds to detonate, after which the EMP shockwave will deal 50 damage to all nearby enemies, and slows them much like an Arc Star explosion.

Finally, let's finish up with some more general tips and tricks on winning Apex Legends matches as Crypto. I think the play-to-earn or the NFT conversation is still really, really early. I do think it will be an important part about the future of our industry on a go-forward basis. It was the kind of move you might have expected from one of the only companies to defend loot boxes in the face of angry fans, critics, and government inquiries. But NFTs have been a particularly touchy subject not just in the public discourse, but inside game publishers as well. Some developers at EA felt similarly, however, and expressed their skepticism directly when Wilson was asked about the NFTs in a company Slack channel in December, according to copies of the communications viewed by Kotaku. In a much more nuanced answer than he provided during the previous investor call, Wilson acknowledged environmental concerns and criticized the speculative push currently driving NFTs.

It would seem as though another in-game event for Apex Legends could be right around the corner. A brand new teaser has popped up on the King's Canyon map, which points to one character in particular: Crypto. Just below, you can see a screenshot of the new in-game teaser in Apex Legends, courtesy of the Apex Legends subreddit. This banner has appears on the King's Canyon map, specifically near the Repulsor section of the map. The nature of the banner bears a striking resemblance to Crypto, the notorious hacker of the Apex Legends universe. You might recall that Crypto was introduced to Apex Legends back at the beginning of Season 3, where he basically obliterated the King's Canyon map, which was the original map that the game first launched with back in February

Apex Legends theorist FrozenFroh revealed a number of new data-mined findings on Reddit today. According to FrozenFroh, leaked legend Crypto may arrive in the game alongside Wattson.

Crypto is an Apex Legends character who never really has to worry about being the most-picked Legend in the game, but he'll perhaps be getting some changes in the future that'll make him and his abilities a bit more desirable for a team. Apex Legends' Associate Live Balance Designer John Larson hinted at as much by saying that the team is "actively working" on changes for Crypto without making him too overbearing for enemy teams to deal with. Larson spoke about Crypto during a recent episode of the "Apex Uncut" podcast. He acknowledged that Crypto does indeed have a low pick rate but said that means Respawn Entertainment must "tread lightly" when it comes to working on the Legend. Crypto's presence as a "niche, off-meta pick," according to Larson, owes itself in part to how Crypto plays compared to other Legends.

The Season 3 announcement trailer features the back story of Crypto, who is responsible for all the changes that happened to Apex Legends at the start of Season 2. Crypto is out for revenge against The Syndicate, the group behind the Apex Games, after what happened to his presumably sister Mila. It remains to be seen what the hacker has in store for Season 3, but several hints point to the possibility of the map again undergoing significant changes, this time with the addition of lava and ice.
