The research series is one way the Blockchain Center of Excellence is working towards achieving the vision of being a premier academic leader of blockchain application research and education. Our resources are published below in three different formats: briefings, case studies and whitepapers. Research briefings are short articles aimed to quickly disseminate key ideas related to blockchain topics. Creating a viable ecosystem, agreeing on the business models, systemic governance and standards, as well as complying with regulations can be as challenging as building the technology.

Experiments with blockchain in higher education are underway at multiple campuses around the country, and many researchers are looking into how to use the technology to verify and deliver credentials.

Massachusetts Institute for Technology, for example, began issuing diplomas via blockchain last year. The plan by Oxford researchers goes beyond digital diplomas—and beyond many typical proposals to disrupt education in general. It argues for a completely new framework for how college is organized, how professors are paid, and how students connect with learning. But even if the proposed platform never emerges, it is likely to spur debates about whether blockchain technology could one day allow professors to reclaim greater control of how higher education operates through digital contracts.

The platform would essentially allow professors to organize their own colleges, and teach and take payments from students directly. Leaders are calling their platform Woolf University, and named the first college in the system Ambrose.

The plan is for professors in the college to offer courses online or in person. Terms conclude with a summative assessment. The lectures will be made publicly available on the Woolf website, YouTube, and as podcasts. This will not only be an aid for students studying a particular paper, but the lectures will also attract students to teachers by raising theirs visibility, and by raising the profile of the college.

Each college in this blockchain university would determine its own admissions standards, and each would set its own tuition price, which is expected to be less than the cost of traditional universities. Joshua Broggi, the founder of Woolf University, is a junior research fellow in philosophy at Oxford University, said in a blog post this summer that the blockchain university is opening a branch in Malta and applying for accreditation through the regulatory body there.

In the same way that we saw Airbnb allow for a more refined allocation of real estate resources, we believe that Woolf can make better use of academic resources. Matthews says the technology could lead to the kind of disruption that automation has brought to retail. Jeffrey R. The carbon emissions associated with securing and confirming the transactions of cryptocurrencies in China could be catastrophic for the environment, according to ground-breaking research published in Nature Communications. Professor Yu Xiong from the University of Surrey, one of the study's co-authors, is calling on authorities to take immediate action or risk bitcoin mining endangering China's plans to be carbon neutral by While bitcoin's potential is clear, its upside mustn't obscure the harm it could cause to our planet. Regulation to promote solar or hydrogen energy could be one way China can play a leading role in the zero-carbon industry. According to the www. This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges of applying blockchain technologies in the education sector. The key blockchain-in-education applications discussed are the digitalization and decentralization of educational certifications and the enhancement and motivation for lifelong learning. Some of the key challenges explored are data protection laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation and the California Consumer Protection Act, which pose impediments for application developers and scalability challenges that arise because of slow-speed blockchain transactions and the Scaling Trilemma. Additionally, market adoption and innovation challenges highlight that blockchain-in-education is a relatively immature innovation that governance bodies within educational institutions often disregard or perceive cautiously. Introduction Methodology Blockchain in education The challenges of applying blockchain in the education sector Conclusion. The goal of this study is to explore the potential opportunities, challenges, and overall implications of implementing blockchain in the education sector. In doing this, the paper will explore two key questions.
