Enterprise Ethereum Alliance Unveils Common Blockchain Standards
The open-source, standards-based, cross-platform collaboration between the two organizations will contribute to accelerating mass adoption of blockchain technologies for business. With hundreds of member companies combined, the EEA and Hyperledger communities represent a wide variety of business sectors from every region of the world.
As members of each other's organizations, the leadership of both organizations will be able to collaborate across tens of Special Interest Groups, Working Groups, meetups and conferences globally, across hundreds of thousands of developers in both communities. EEA community members working on specifications and standards can turn to Hyperledger to collaborate on software implementations of those standards. Earlier this year, Hyperledger Sawtooth added support for the EVM as a transaction processor, bringing smart contracts developed for the Ethereum MainNet over to Sawtooth-based networks.
That effort, dubbed "Seth," is now in active use, and the developers anticipate submitting it for conformance testing to the EEA specification as soon as possible. This project is a best practice example of internet-scale software development work, combining community-driven open standards and community-developed, production-quality open source reference implementation.
Down the road, this mutually beneficial relationship will encourage Ethereum developers to consider submitting their enterprise projects to Hyperledger and Hyperledger project maintainers to consider taking de-facto interfaces appropriate for standardization to the appropriate EEA working groups.
This relationship will also enable Hyperledger developers to write code that conforms to the EEA specification and certify them through EEA certification testing programs expected to launch in the second half of This is a logical next step that will strengthen the industry as a whole, expand each organization's reach and benefit from the collaboration across ecosystems, while supporting each organization's distinct mission," said David Treat , Managing Director at Accenture.
The Enterprise Ethereum Alliance EEA is the industry's first global standards organization to deliver an open, standards-based architecture and specification to accelerate the adoption of Enterprise Ethereum. The EEA's world-class Enterprise Ethereum Client Specification and forth-coming testing and certification programs will ensure interoperability, multiple vendors of choice, and lower costs for its members - the world's largest enterprises and most innovative startups. The Enterprise Ethereum Alliance EEA , which consists of over companies and 1, individual members, has announced the launch of a new testnet for business building on Ethereum. The EEA is a standards organisation for Ethereum which works to provide interoperability for business users of the blockchain network. The testnet, which will allow users to build decentralised applications dApps in a sandbox environment, is designed to operate the same as building in a live environment just without the costs. MetaMask will be supported out of the box, which will allow users to deploy and use their own dApps. The testnet will work on interoperability improvements, which is the ability of Ethereum-based clients and applications to communicate with one another. At the moment, interoperability constraints are a significant limiting factor for blockchain adoption and proliferation, with many experts predicting that interoperability and scalability will be major focus areas for The testnet has been developed alongside Whiteblock, a blockchain testing and development company which lets business development teams quickly deploy blockchain and distributed systems for in-house testing ahead of a live launch. ConsenSys, an incubator for Ethereum-based enterprise solutions, has welcomed the testnet, stating:.

Wakefield, Mass. The formation of EEA Community Projects signals to the world that there is now a central location where Ethereum-related business standards are developed and new projects are advanced. Creating EEA Community Projects will extend the pool of partners, talented developers and engineers dedicated to solving similar problems, and will help the community innovate even faster around initiatives like the Baseline Protocol. It marks a milestone for distributed technology and a giant step forward in the harmonization of the open source and open standards communities. By transitioning to the EEA Community Projects , the Ethereum OASIS Open Project will continue sponsoring projects and will continue to permit frictionless engagement between developers who are actively contributing to developing clear, open standards, first-rate documentation, and shared test suites that facilitate new features and enhancements for the Ethereum ecosystem.
In the past 18 months since the beginning of , enterprise blockchain adoption has been progressing steadily. Companies and governments alike are all trying to use this technology to solve some of the most difficult problems in the world of transactions. Businesses and regulations have strong requirements on identities and permissioning, which tend to lead them towards a permissioned over a permissionless a. For these permissioned chains, three blockchain protocols have emerged as the top choices: Hyperledger Fabric , Enterprise Ethereum and R3 Corda. Both Fabric and Enterprise Ethereum are general purpose tools for any industry, while Corda is custom-designed for the financial industry. Each protocol option has a very different lineage and design focus, and all three have seen major adoptions by serious businesses and governments running on production-quality systems today. In full disclosure, I have personally worked on two of them: as a Fabric committer responsible for the development of node.
