The namecoin-core packaage proper contains namecoind, namecoin-cli and namecoin-tx. The namecoin-cli thing is used to send RPC command to namecoind, and among those commands are wallet commands.
It works like a charm. I think this package doesn't really offer wallet options, so you can't create new addresses or accounts. I would need to look into it for --disable-wallet I wonder if this is enabled with namecoin-qt, but I am not sure it would. Please let me know if there are some technical problems.
