An exchange-traded fund is an investment fund, comprising a pool of assets, traded on a stock exchange. The general attraction is that an ETF offers individual investors the benefits of diversification, protection and liquidity. The manager buys a number of office buildings and shopping centres across a range of locations.
It allows you, the investor, to avoid the exposure that comes from buying a single asset. Instead, you get a share of a diversified portfolio. If the value of the portfolio rises, so does the value of your unit. An ETF is also regulated. This protects you from some of the risks such as fraud that come from buying assets directly. Rather than physical assets as in our example , many ETFs hold securities such as stocks and bonds or derivatives.
These funds can be either passively or actively managed. Passively managed funds, which are the most prevalent, hold a basket of assets that track the market, or a market segment. Actively managed funds, by contrast, hold more shares whose price the fund manager expects to rise strongly, and fewer or no shares they expect to perform poorly. A Bitcoin-based ETF is seen as something that will entice more investors to gamble on cryptocurrency.
Buying Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies directly can be fraught. Forget your private key the equivalent of a password or PIN and you lose it all. There is no friendly local bank manager who can retrieve or reset a password or make good your loss.
Scams are also on the rise. Unlike the dollar, euro, pound, yen, peso, and other government-backed currencies, cryptocurrencies are not officially supported by any central bank or government. The currency has traditionally traded in an open marketplace similar to the stock market, where buyers and sellers can exchange their local money for bitcoin or vice versa. While some cryptocurrency exchanges host trading platforms that have slight variations in prices, the overall market price of bitcoin is the latest price at which a transaction occurred. However, bitcoin value is much different and depends on the investor—some say that the intrinsic value of bitcoin is much higher than market value; others claim bitcoin might not be worthless. The value of bitcoin is determined by the same market forces that influence the value of any other goods or services. If more people want to buy than sell, prices will likely increase.

Interest-rate adjustments As with most markets, where a Reserve Bank adjusts interest rates up, the market tends to retract from riskier investments into lower-risk investments as their yields increase making these investments attractive relative to their risk profile. As such, tech shares and cryptocurrencies are one of the first asset classes to experience a contraction in price when interest rates are adjusted up.

The purpose of this article is to find a better technique for estimating the volatility of the price of bitcoin on the one hand and to check if this special kind of asset called cryptocurrency behaves like other stock market indices. Using daily data over the period — We examine two asymmetric stochastic volatility models used to describe the volatility dependencies found in most financial returns. To estimate these models, our analysis is based on the Markov Chain Monte-Carlo method. Model comparisons illustrate that the ARSV-t model performs better performances. This result concerns bitcoin as well as the other stock market indices. Without forgetting that our finding proves the efficiency of Markov Chain for our sample and the convergence and stability for all parameters to a certain level. On the whole, it seems that permanent shocks have an effect on the volatility of the price of the bitcoin and also on the other stock market.

This study aims to address the timely question of whether Bitcoin exhibited a safe haven property against the major Australian stock indices during the first and second waves of the COVID pandemic in Australia and whether such property is similar or different in one year time from the first wave of the COVID The authors used the bivariate Dynamic Conditional Correlation, Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity model, on the five-day returns of Bitcoin and Australian stock indices for the sample period between 23 April, and 19 April, The outset of the second COVID wave, which was comparatively more severe than the first, is also reflected in the results with considerably higher correlations. There is a lack of in-depth empirical evidence on the safe haven capabilities of Bitcoins for various Australian stock indices during the first and second waves of the COVID pandemic.
