In this demonstration, students' assumptions are challenged as they observe the power of surface tension in water droplets. Although a water molecule has an overall neutral charge, the actual structure of a water molecule makes it a polar molecule it has a positive end and a negative end. The two hydrogen atoms are slightly positive, and the oxygen atom is slightly negative. A weak link occurs between the negatively charged oxygen atom of one water molecule and the positively charged hydrogen atoms of a neighbouring water molecule.
This weak link is called a hydrogen bond. The polarity of the water molecule can also cause it to be attracted to molecules of other polar substances. There are two types of "stickiness" in this demonstration: cohesion and adhesion. The attraction between water molecules is called cohesion. The cohesive force that occurs between water molecules is so strong that, at the water's surface, it creates a "skin", which is known as surface tension.
Surface tension is strong enough to support insects that crawl across the water's surface, like water striders Gerridae. The attraction of water molecules to other substances, like soil or glass, is called adhesion. As drops of water are added onto a penny, the adhesive force between the water and the penny keeps the water from falling off. Cohesive forces are strong, but not unbreakable. As a water drop builds up and out, usually bulging over the sides of the penny, the cohesive forces will eventually be overcome by the force of gravity on the water molecules.
The "skin" will burst, and all of the water will spill off. The cohesive forces between polar molecules are stronger than those between non-polar molecules, such as those in oil or syrup.
That's why you can make a bigger "pile" of water than of oil or syrup. Describe the cohesive and adhesive properties of water. How many drops of water they think a coin can hold? Were your predictions correct? Does it matter if the coin is heads or tails? How is it possible to get so many water drops on a coin?
Would a 10 cent coin hold more or less drops? Teacher Tip: Younger students may believe a 10 cent coin holds more because it is worth more despite being smaller.
Teacher Tip: To make sure your count is accurate, hold the eyedropper far enough above the coin so that the drop has to fall a short distance before fusing with the droplet on the coin.
Details Activity Length mins. Objectives Describe the cohesive and adhesive properties of water. What To Do Place a coin on a table or desk. Holding the eyedropper close to the surface of the coin, carefully squeeze water droplets onto the coin, one at a time.
The droplets should pool up on the coin, creating a big droplet of water. Get the students to count the drops. Stop squeezing when the droplet on the coin breaks up and overflows. The count is the number of drops that the coin could hold before the one that caused the coin to overflow. Wipe off the coin or use a new one. As before, gradually add drops of oil or syrup to the surface of the coin using the eyedropper. Extensions Perform this as a student activity, rather than just a demo.
It reduces the surface tension causing a dramatic reduction in the number of drops that will fit on the coin. Start with a full glass of plain water with a dry rim to prevent the water from dripping down the side of the glass. How many coins can we add to the water without the glass overflowing? Gently add coins one by one.
Because of surface tension, the water will rise above the rim of the glass before it spills just like the initial experiment. Compare your original prediction with the number of coins you were able to add. The authors explore what would happen if you were eaten by a shark or if you fell into a black hole, but some of the deadly scenarios explored in the book speak to specific New York-centric anxieties — such as elevator horror stories. By Majid Hassan Khan. A blimp flew over Madrid and showered money. These falling paper bills fluttered, tumbled and followed random trajectories while descending to the streets. The behaviour has a similarity with the falling of leaves from a tree, descent of snowflakes and path of tossed coins in fountains and wishing wells. It is a wonder why Newton never addressed the behaviour of falling leaves from the apple tree in his garden at Woolsthorpe Manor.
Urban Myths: Can a coin dropped from a skyscraper kill you?
Gold, silver and platinum gained on Monday while palladium logged its first loss in ten sessions, after reaching a week high on Friday. Gains in gold and silver were their first in four sessions. The pair of metals dropped in January, however, even as platinum and palladium scored sharp gains for the month. Both metals are still somewhat oversold on a short-term technical basis and are due for some additional corrective upside action this week," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note. They lost 2. Gold prices fell 1. Silver for March delivery tacked on 9. They sank 8.
Coins Falling from the Empire
After riding a wave of hype and internet irony to over 70 cents per token , Dogecoin's triumphant rise has ended for now. Part of the reason the cryptocurrency, which entered at under a cent and maxed out at 72, reached such heights was Elon Musk's hyped appearance on Saturday Night Live. Musk has been spruiking the coin since January, and hopeful crypto traders expected the Tesla founder's SNL appearance to be a huge advertisement for the memecoin.
After waiting for almost two weeks since the market fell to its lowest, we are finally looking at the crypto market walking the path of recovery. With BTC marking a 9. As observed by Santiment usually every time trading volumes rise, Bitcoin witnesses a price fall. It was all but a matter of when for a recovery to occur.
I t's one of Itchy and Scratchy's finest moments. From atop the Empire State Building, the mouse drops a penny. With a fury only the furies could conjure, the metal disc hurtles down with enough speed to incinerate the cat. But is The Simpsons the perfectly accurate guide to reality we all assume it to be? Is the urban myth true: can a coin dropped from the top of a skyscraper actually kill someone? It couldn't even burn flesh — except in certain circumstances. All dropped objects experience constant acceleration — in other words, they go faster and faster, their speed constantly increasing, at a rate of just under 10 metres per second.
Over the past few months, discussion of a new crypto coin, called FEG Token, started to slowly sprinkle across the internet. Soon enough, more unnamed investor types with obscure Twitter handles began discussing this new coin on Twitter, touting it as the next big crypto investment. People were enticed to join a Telegram group , which soon grew from a few dozen random crypto insiders to around 40, wannabe investors, who seemed to be on the chat on a rolling-around-the-clock basis, constantly sharing gorilla memes and gorilla jokes and gorilla analysis on FEG Token and talking about how many they had all purchased, or planned to, and how the price was going to skyrocket.
