Deep in the Hertfordshire countryside, a disconcerting hum emerges from the laundry room attached to a converted barn. The temperature inside is a balmy 34 degrees Celsius, more reminiscent of midday in Burkina Faso than Berkhamsted. But the source of all this noise and heat is no malfunctioning tumble-dryer. On a shelf stands an ordinary-looking computer the size of a small crate, which is connected to a global network of similar devices. Every second of every day — even while its owner, retired builder Geoff Dunn, sleeps — it is, incongruously, mining for cryptocurrency, intermittently topping up an account with newly minted coins. Alongside 80, chickens, cows and ewes, they have two rigs: one in the farm office and another in an office next to the chickens.

Easy Crypto Hunter Joins Cudos as Hosting Validator

A Denbighshire cattle and sheep farm is using its renewable energy to power specialist mining computers. Philip Hughes is running banks of specialist computers in a shed on his Denbighshire farm that are powered by electricity generated from cow muck. Philip hopes the arrangement will help address the Achilles heel of crypto mining — the consumption of huge amounts of electricity produced from fossil fuels.

Crypto mining involves using computers to solve complex equations, for which users are rewarded in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum and NEO. As prices of these have soared, so has global energy consumption, with prospectors scrambling for a stake in the market by running power-hungry machines in ever greater numbers. In May, Elon Musk wiped billions off global crypto markets when he announced Tesla was suspending vehicle sales using Bitcoin, claiming crypto mining was bad for the environment.

It prompted a scramble to find more eco-friendly solutions — and to reconfigure cryptocurrencies so that producing them requires less energy.

The firm was set up four years ago by Josh Riddett, who said a majority of his clients were farmers producing renewable energy from solar, hydro, wind or anaerobic digestion. Josh Riddett — a year-old who developed a fascination with Bitcoin as a business student at Lancaster University — has invented a mining machine aimed at helping farmers tap into their on-site renewable energy. Bitcoin mining often comes at the expense of using huge amounts of electricity — something Elon Musk expressed grave concerns about as he announced Tesla would no longer be accepting the flagship cryptocurrency as payment, despite gleefully announcing it would only days earlier. And, while many believe Elon Musk is already secretly cooking up a green scheme of his own, the answer may already be available in the form of a mining rig capable of running on cow dung. The site is powered using anaerobic digestion AD machines which turn animal waste into renewable energy. Farmers with renewable energy sources like solar, hydro, wind or anaerobic digestion can sell their power to the National Grid for around four to seven pence per kilowatt hour — but they can earn up to ten times that running a crypto mining machine instead. Josh is also keen to dispel the stereotypical image of farmers perhaps not being tech savvy or tuned into DeFi solutions.
