Cryptocurrencies: Money, Trust and Regulation

Why you should watch: The author, Oonagh McDonald, talks to the CSFI’s Jane Fuller and Dave Birch about the evolution of ‘crypto’, from Bitcoin to central bank digital currencies. The discussion explores privacy versus anonymity, criminal activity versus the surveillance state and speed versus customer protection. If it’s money, central banks must be in on the act; if it’s a speculative investment, that’s also one for the regulators. So can trust be built in a decentralised form of currency?

Moderator: Jane Fuller (Senior Fellow, CSFI)

Oonagh McDonald is an international expert in financial regulation. She has served on the boards of the Financial Services Authority and the Investors Compensation Scheme. A former MP, her books tend to reveal the way financial innovation can turn from dream to nightmare.

Dave Birch, another old friend of the CSFI, is a director of Consult Hyperion and Digital Fellow at the University of Exeter Business School's "Digit Lab". He is an internationally recognised thought leader in digital identity and digital money.
