Women in Blockchain Technology Examine Female Representation in Africa’s Crypto Market

A 2017 study by the National Center for Women and Information Technology reported that 26% of computing-related jobs are held by women. The technology and finance industry bears the reputation as being a “boys’ club”, but female leaders in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in Africa are finding their way into crypto finance positions. Women in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Botswana and Zimbabwe are becoming crypto trailblazers and rising to positions of power and influence.

VOA’s Abby Sun spoke to Nelly Chatue-Diop, founder of Ejara, a crypto investment trading platform and Yaliwe Soko, chairwoman of United Africa Blockchain Association, about female representation in crypto finance. Nelly explains the importance of helping countries take back ownership of their wealth after the devaluation of the CFA franc, common myths and challenges while educating people about cryptocurrency, and the financial freedom that crypto brings to women. Yaliwe discusses her organization’s goal of unifying the African blockchain ecosystem through education and empowerment. She also explains how cryptocurrency and blockchain technology are presenting more opportunities for women in Africa.
